4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 deepsouth (23) - biloxi, Mississippi, USA - MAY 1, 2008
rating is for a 2005 version drank in 2008.
the appearance of this beer is opaque black with some nice thin tan head.
the smell is very complex. i detect smoke, toffee, chocolate and upon swilling the beer, the smoke seemed to rise from the glass. i also detect some nutty malty sweetness.
the taste is as complex as the smell and consistant. this beer has WAY more dimension than the 2007 i tried not too long ago.
the mouthfeel is very heavy and full and should be an example for this style.
overall, i could easily drink a whole big bottle of this by myself, but would love to share with friends.
5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20 LJBrewing (22) - Anchorage, Alaska, USA - JUL 7, 2005
UPDATED: JUL 8, 2005 This is the proto-type Smoked Porter. If you are looking for what a Smoked Porter should taste like, look no furthur.
I have not had the patience to let mine age beyond the current vintage in the stores. My thoughts are the Smoked Porters in general are an underatted delicious style that should only gain in popularity. The alder smoked malt is incredible. The balance on this beer between the smoke accent and porter base style is magic. This is a beer that goes well with food and would be a fine completement to a salmon dish.
1.8 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 5/20 MMMBEERLS (18) - Portland, Oregon, USA - MAY 6, 2008
Bottle purchased from local store in Northwest. Poured black with 0 head and 0 Head retention. This beer had the aroma of burnt bacon (Not Good). I would compare the flavor to chewing on a used match extremely harsh. As I choked this one down my stomach began to rumble causing me to run to the head and lose it all. I woke up with the worst hangover I have ever had and I did not even catch a buzz. BUMMER!
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 drinkerofbeers (18) - California, USA - NOV 10, 2007
draft. didnt really know what to expect before trying this brew. was shocked at how smokey it was but after the first few sips my palate got more used to the flavor. i was looking for a bit more body, sweetness and maybe a higher ABV. not my favorite but a good example of a smokey beer.
2.8 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 JRBowie (18) - Atascosa, Texas, USA - MAR 26, 2005
This current rating is rather low but let me explan. I was itroduced to this beer before I was in "The Industry". It was 2001. That was the absolute best "Vintage" I have ever had. However this years Vintage was "Nuts and berrys", not anything to write home about. It was like meeting with a long distant’s girl friend and finding out that you have grown apart.
4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 pinotwinelover (17) - USA - JUL 12, 2003
Hard to drink much as it is very rich, but a great beer with smoked almonds. I always pick some up in the fall or winter for those cold winter nights. Great Beer1
3.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 wrxkaboom (17) - juneau, Alaska, USA - SEP 18, 2006
Dominated by a smokey aroma which carries over into a smokey dominated taste. A great beer to drink on a cold day. Also leaves a distinctive taste in recipes that call for beer.
4.7 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 brandonfisher (16) - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA - AUG 25, 2005
This was an explosion of smokiness at its greatest that I though was very well done for a Smoked Porter. Pours out black opaque and had little head and then dissipated quickly. Flavor was smoked and it was great for a smoked porter and met my expectations. At first I was reluctant to try it since it was smoked but it added a good strong flavor that was different. It did have a tingly sensation when going down. Overall I would try this again. Cheers to Room Temp Beer.
3.3 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 8/20 cheubi (15) - Knoxville, Tennessee, USA - SEP 26, 2004
This beer exemplifies the very definition of the style. It is an excellent, robust porter with a HUGE smoke dominance in the flavor profile. The porter flavor characteristics are completely overshadowed and engulfed by the smoke flavor in this beer. It hits the palate from the beginning and lingers through the finish (and lingers....and lingers....and lingers....). Flavor is reminiscent of good beef-jerky.
3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Cabeero (15) - Thornton, Colorado, USA - OCT 10, 2008
If miller high-life is the champagne of beers, this is most certainly the scotch of ales. A bold and forthright smoky aroma smolders out of the glass as you pour this beer. A patient nose will also reveal hints of coffee, chocolate and vanilla. But make no mistake, the other smells are singing back up. The flavor isn’t much different, a medium bodied, malty porter with big Smokey overtones. This beer would go great with a cigar.
