Ughsmash (3147), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Jul 4, 2007 2002 bottle, extra special thanks to mswf!!! Poured very deep brown with an initial thicker caramel head.. receded rather quickly to a scattered loose cap. The aroma was very heavily smoked, even after the 5 years.. roasted baker’s chocolate beneath, providing a wonderful base... some sweet notes emerge as an afterthought, and make this truly decadent! Flavor had almost burnt, semi-sweet chocolate at the core.. some coffee bitterness with very well-smoked beechwood rising above all.. semi-sweet chocolate and plum skins with that wonderful smoke through the finish. This was a little lighter-bodied than I’d like, but it felt great.. slightly grainy, well-smoked, with a long, camp-fire-infused chocolate finish. Just loved it! Thanks Matt!
fishingnet (900), Brandon, Florida, USA Nov 20, 2008 Bottle courtesy of tpd975. Pours black with a one finger tan head that leaves good lacing. Aroma reminds me of when I was a kid and my Dad would go buy smoked mullet and stink up the whole house. Taste is full on smoke with a touch of roasted malt. Medium mouthfeel with a mild to moderate amount of bitterness. Different but good. Gypsy19 (238), AMERICA RISING, USA Nov 20, 2008 I can’t appreciate this at all... This reminds me of when, as a child, I thought it would be a good idea to drink Liquid Smoke (the meat-seasoning liquid). This stuff tastes just like that. Awful flavor. Lokks and smells great however, strangely. can8ianben (660), Pasadena, California, USA Nov 20, 2008 2008 bottle. Quite possibly my favorite porter I’ve ever tried. Deep and rich, almost stout like in quality. A friend of mine claimed he could taste the smoked salmon that the malt is smoked along side of, but really its just the smoky flavor that comes through, not the fish. Wonderful beer. drjay44 (207), Colorado, USA Nov 20, 2008 Vintage 2008, 22 oz. bottle.
Pours a dark tan head, very dark black body with minimal light penetration.....nose of smoke, malts, bit of sweetish sensation....tastes of malts initially, then smoke, with a light hop finish. A good mouthfeel and great balance for the rauchbier style. I wonder about aging some to taste the evolution of the beer. 11/07/2008 ChazMania (314), Pasadena, California, USA Nov 18, 2008 Bomber. I know I’m against the grain here. This stuff was hard to swallow, I think I poured half the bomber out. It certainly is smokey, but I tasted no chocolate. It was more like bacon grease and campfire. I can see that others really enjoy this and that’s cool, its not for me. I have another bottle I will likely give away.
