desurfer (1039), Pinellas Park, Florida, USA Apr 23, 2008 Pours a dark brown with little head. Aroma is woody and smoky, with some bacon and sausage notes. Unlike my previous smoked beer experiences, I’m actually liking it. The flavor is hoppy with some hickory and smoke flavors, but the smoke is not overpowering; rather, it blends nicely and compliments the other flavors. Tasty stuff!
thegreenrooster (1528), St.louis, Missouri, USA Oct 15, 2008 Pour is a black with a small tan head. Aroma is smoky but nothing over the top. There is also a nice roasted malt in there. Flavor is again more roasted malts and coffee then comes the smoke to balance things out. Finish is a little bitter but goes down smooth. This would be great sipping on cold winter nights. beer_chugger (76), Colorado, USA Oct 13, 2008 2008 vintage. I’m not sure if enough can be said about this wonderful brew. Pours black with a dark thick head. Aromas are of smokiness. Tastes of rich roasted malts and is rich in smokey flavor. Also, hints of dried fruit and chocolate are also noticeable. Would go great with b-b-q, salted pork, and a wide variety of specialty meats. The finish is delicately bitter with the smokey flavor lingering for some time. This is one of the finest porters I’ve had. I’ve been looking for this beer for over a year and it was well worth the wait. oakbluff (226), Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada Oct 11, 2008 2007 vintage- pours a dark cola with quickly dissipating beige head. Nose- sweet smokiness and some dark fruits. Taste- initial wave of smoke, then blends into a fairly light bodied dry porter. Not much heft to it. Carbonation is on the high side. Finish is quite bitter. The smoke really makes the beer, otherwise would be a pretty boring porter. Drinkability is good. Cabeero (14), Thornton, Colorado, USA Oct 10, 2008 If miller high-life is the champagne of beers, this is most certainly the scotch of ales. A bold and forthright smoky aroma smolders out of the glass as you pour this beer. A patient nose will also reveal hints of coffee, chocolate and vanilla. But make no mistake, the other smells are singing back up. The flavor isn’t much different, a medium bodied, malty porter with big Smokey overtones. This beer would go great with a cigar. Gooney (39), Oregon, USA Oct 8, 2008 22oz bottle from Joe - Pours a nice rich dark color. Hint of coffee flavor and a bit of smoke. Great balance. Great beer.
