3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 FlacoAlto (3086) - Tucson, Arizona, USA - JAN 12, 2006
This beer is a black color with perhaps some brown highlights to it. As I was pouring it I could see the it was a brilliantly clear deep brown color. The head is initially a bit more than one-finger thick and is a light brown color. The aroma at first hits you with a roasted bitterness similar to a rich black coffee, it then begins to pick up some sweeter malt notes of chocolate and something reminiscent of candied malt balls. There is a definite acidic component to the roast character as well, perhaps a bit like an espresso.
The body of this beer is a incongruent mix of lightness mixed with a slight, oily mouthfeel contributed by the oats. The taste is of course dominated by roasted notes, which contribute both a significant acidity as well as burnt grain notes reminiscent of the darkest roast coffees. The beer’s finish has an astringent grainy, burnt grain-husk note to it that is typical of many American Stouts. This beer certainly has lots of flavor especially given how light it feels on the palate. The burnt/ roast flavors and the acidity tend to linger on the tongue long after the beer has left my mouth.
This stout definitely seems to need a bit more malt and body to it. The roast character is just a bit too strong. Having said that, this definitely appeals to the side of me that likes a thick, black, strong cup of joe in the morning. The Oats add just a touch of body to this brew, which certainly helps out.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 barenada (211) - Georgetown, Indiana, USA - DEC 6, 2005
(bottle) A decent head that faded very quickly. Aroma was mainly chocolate, with perhaps some cola as well. Flavor was a mix of coffee, chocolate, and cola, with maybe a touch of juniper. A decent and safe beer from one of my favorite breweries.

3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 danfosha (47) - Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA - NOV 16, 2005
Medium lacing on a brown foamy head. Strangely, the first aromas and even taste were reminiscent of anchovies, but it quickly blew off. This bottle was at least 6 mos old and that may be the reason for the unusual smell. After that, a really nice stout - deep black color, full bodied, well balanced, maybe a bit sweet for my tastes. The required chocolate and coffee are well represented.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 BrewDad (3384) - Olympia, Washington, USA - SEP 12, 2005
A dark black color when poured. An awesome flavor with a slight coffee flavor in the end. A great stout. My first one was warm but the second was awesomely cold and this was a great beer. Please may I have another?
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Cable (286) - SE, Oklahoma, USA - SEP 7, 2005
Sampled from bottle. Pours opaqyue black with a tall tan head. Aroma is predominantly mocha. Flavor slightly sweet with roasted malts and fruit and chocolate also present. Medium-bodied (a bit thin for the style/my expectations) and moderately carbonated. A decent stout and one to try if it is readily available to you. Probably not worth the shipping charges I had to pay.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 brandonfisher (16) - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA - AUG 25, 2005
Aroma impression was malty and nutty as a Stout should smell. Pours Opaque, with little head and disspated quickly. Toffish flavor and nuttish. Not offensive and not to overly done. Had with Room Tempature Beer, Cheers!
