A slightly above average stout, good colour, head retention and aroma. Moderately complex flavor, sour aftertaste. Not bad.

12oz. bottle dated 10/19/05. Black color with virtually no head. Mild roasted malt aroma. Flavor of dark roasted malt, dark chocolate and a bit of vinegar. Thin body with low carbonation. Thanks to Swededog for the bottle.

TAR (2236) - Lafayette, Colorado, USA - AUG 30, 2003
UPDATED: MAY 21, 2009 Clear dark cherry. Quick light tan foam. Roasty, borderline burnt aroma. Hints of medicine, cheese, hazelnut, tar, and licorice. Velvety, jellyish mouthfeel. Very earthy and roasty flavors with hints of toasty oats, concord grape, and cardboard. Slightly oxidized. More focus on the caramel sweetness and less emphasis on the fruity aspects and we’d have a decent stout.

Black color; thick head. Light aroma of roasted malt. Weak taste, some malt, some roasted malt, some caramel, light sweet liquorice, but really too simple, soft.

5-19-08 bottle shared with lb4lb thanks to Bitterbill
Black pour with no lasting head. Smell is figs, unripe bananas and a hint of muted vanilla and more figs. Flavor is somewhat milky and has some light chocolate malt to it. Little to no carbonation. Has a strange sweet charred aftertasted and the palate just doesn’t work well with the other elements of the beer.

Pours a dark black color that is not see through at all. Aroma of black licorice and chocolate coffee in taste. A smooth hint of oatmeal in the aftertaste et very smooth for a stout. A hint of coco throughout the beer.

On tap was pretty mild, though seeing alc% now, makes sense. The flavor and aroma were far too subtle and simply didn’t please the senses. The palate was way too thin and wet. Overall, not bad, but is competing in a pretty competitive style.

UPDATED: NOV 20, 2008 Bottle (BB Mar/2009). Head is initially small, frothy, brown, mostly diminishing. Body is dark brown to black. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (roasted grain, chocolate, husks), trace hops (flowers), with a light note of vanilla. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter, husky. Medium body, watery/creamy texture, lively carbonation. Dull aroma. Vegetal/husky. Ehhh.

Pours a watery black with a splash of tan head that vanishes before your very eyes. Nose is watery and mildy roasty. Flavor really tastes more like a porter to me. Very thin overall. Not a bad beer just kind of boring.
