Commercial Description:
Based on the traditional style of Kölsch beer brewed in Cologne, Germany. Haines Booth Our Crew loves the chance to hook up with Alaskan fans at festivals! Flavor Profile: Alaskan Summer Ale balances a softly malted palate with the clean freshness of Hallertauer hops. In the tradition of the style, neither overpowers the other. Both hops and malt come together to refresh and renew the palate. The straw-gold color and easy drinkability are an enjoyable way to celebrate summer. History: Brewed in our original brewhouse in 1997, this beer is part of our Rough Draft series and has met success with each limited edition release. The enthusiastic reception led the Brew Crew to bring it to the West Coast as a summer seasonal. Ingredients: Water, malt, hops and yeast with no adjuncts, no preservatives and no pasteurization. Our glacier-fed water originates in the 1,500 square-mile Juneau Ice Field. Crafted from Pale, Munich, Vienna and wheat malts, with Hallertauer hops and our own house yeast.

Re-rate (07 Aug 2005): Now that I’ve rated more beers, and read what Kolsch is supposed to be about, I re-rated. The style isn’t my favorite, but for the style, I think that it is too sweet and over-blended. There are no hops, not even mellow German hops. So too sweet, not a med. dry finish, the head dissapates quickly and I don’t find the color (that of post-multivitamin pee) that exciting. Better that baloney beer, but not by that much. First rate (June 17, 2005):It is a pale color with little in the way of hops or strong flavor. It struck me as a watered down version of the pale ale. I like the logo, but I’m sticking with other Alaska Brewing Compay offerings.

On tap@O’Brien’s: Pale golden color with a very small, fast fading head. Aroma is jucy fruit gum. Flavor lightly sweet and fruity with a hint of bubble gum. Smooth thin palate.

Nose is a small grassy hay aroma with a splice of bannana and vanilla. Gold colored and a tiny head was created but very quickly formed a thin ring around the perimeter. The flavor is bland and has only a straw grass and malt profile. It’s only a beer for those days in the sun.

Pours a small white head that s gone in a flash and leaving minimal lacing behind. Lightly hazy gold hued brew. Delicate fruit and malt nose, light citrus and oxydation. Light body. Lightly toasted malts, grassy hops, vinous notes. Finish is dry. Thanks Stephen!

Light and fruity with not much going for it. Unobjectionable but throughly uninteresting. Very weak flavor profile.

The aroma had light fruit, slight flowery note, malts, and a hint of citrus. The flavor had light fermented fruit, malts, citrus, and flowers. THe beer poured an orange/yellow color w/ slight head and lacing. THe mouthfeel was light and creamy.

Initial phenolic aroma of clove and a little banana quickly dissipated to a mild grain/malt aroma with slight DMS aroma detectable. Beer poured with a golden color with a very fine head and no lace. Several minutes after pouring, a mixture of medium and a few large bubbles continued to rise up through the glass. Flavor was heavier than other Kölsch beers I’ve tried: more like a kristalweizen than a Kölsch. A pleasant flavor, but I’m not sure this conforms to the style. Palate was a little thin and fizzy. Not a bad beer, but falls short of other offerings I’ve had from Alaskan Brewing.
