Commercial Description:
Based on the traditional style of Kölsch beer brewed in Cologne, Germany. Haines Booth Our Crew loves the chance to hook up with Alaskan fans at festivals! Flavor Profile: Alaskan Summer Ale balances a softly malted palate with the clean freshness of Hallertauer hops. In the tradition of the style, neither overpowers the other. Both hops and malt come together to refresh and renew the palate. The straw-gold color and easy drinkability are an enjoyable way to celebrate summer. History: Brewed in our original brewhouse in 1997, this beer is part of our Rough Draft series and has met success with each limited edition release. The enthusiastic reception led the Brew Crew to bring it to the West Coast as a summer seasonal. Ingredients: Water, malt, hops and yeast with no adjuncts, no preservatives and no pasteurization. Our glacier-fed water originates in the 1,500 square-mile Juneau Ice Field. Crafted from Pale, Munich, Vienna and wheat malts, with Hallertauer hops and our own house yeast.

Pours a clear golden color, thin head. Aroma is a little bit malty, little bit floral. Pretty thin mouthfeel, slightly sweet to start with a little bit of tang in the finish.

(12 oz bottle) Now if all Kölsch were like this, I might really enjoy this style more. Just pouring the beer, and bam, a very aromatic, bready maltiness enthusiastically greets the nostrils. The beer is topped by a small, but creamy off-white head that maintains a small layer mostly because of the multitude of carbonation bubbles. Only a tiny bit of patchy lacing graces the glass. The color is a clear golden and very pretty to look at. This is a fairly sweet beer, quite malty, bready, lightly bitter. In fact, the flavor and especially the aroma of the maltiness are a little reminiscent of a German Oktoberfest to me. With each sip, I inhale that wonderful bready aroma, very nice. It might could use a bit more hops to balance out the sweetness, and that might also clean out the palate of this medium bodied brew just a touch. I don't think this is really an accurate example of the Kölsch style, but nevertheless, I'm enjoying the hell out of it. Easy to drink, smooth on the palate, deliciously malty, now that's my kind of "Summer Ale!"

I like this Kolsch-style beer better than I liked the real thing in Berlin! Strange, I know. Slightly sweet, more American in style and texture than the European original. Effervescent, as it should be, but less bubbly than the Europeans. Smooth drinking.

On Tap at Kahootz A clear pale yellow/golden with a small white head with not much lacing. Aroma was very faint as was the flavors. Wheat, with doughy nd yeast notes..but very subdued. Slightly sweet as well. Feel was very light and smooth. Easy drinking, fairly tasty.

A wheaty-oaty aroma. Cool cap. They obviously went to a lot of thought on the label, but it’s somehow lacking. Golden brew with a webby head. Grainy, lagerish, mildly hopped. Mouth is dry and starchy. So-so, but this isn’t my fave style.

Alaskan Summer, huh? What’s next, Jamaican Winter beer? But seriously folks, this beer was a nice surprise from the mother-in-law who went on an Alaskan cruise. It’s great to have everyone you know trained to look for beer any time they travel. The Free Willy scene on the label is interesting too. As for the beer, it is a clear light orange color with a thin white head. Very little lacing. The aroma is light citrus and hops. Light and crisp mouthfeel, with sweet fruit, malt and hops flavors. Citrus comes in again with the finish, with a bit of lingering caramel. Overall this is a decent Kölsch.

Deep, dark golden appearance with a thin white head that fades quickly. Fresh mown grass aroma - but very faint - maybe a little fresh lake water aroma as well. Has ome buttery and salty notes with a bit of biscuity sweetness - but not very pronounced. Easy drinking, smooth palate. Refreshing after an afternoon hike in Alaska.
