Commercial Description:
Based on the traditional style of Kölsch beer brewed in Cologne, Germany. Haines Booth Our Crew loves the chance to hook up with Alaskan fans at festivals! Flavor Profile: Alaskan Summer Ale balances a softly malted palate with the clean freshness of Hallertauer hops. In the tradition of the style, neither overpowers the other. Both hops and malt come together to refresh and renew the palate. The straw-gold color and easy drinkability are an enjoyable way to celebrate summer. History: Brewed in our original brewhouse in 1997, this beer is part of our Rough Draft series and has met success with each limited edition release. The enthusiastic reception led the Brew Crew to bring it to the West Coast as a summer seasonal. Ingredients: Water, malt, hops and yeast with no adjuncts, no preservatives and no pasteurization. Our glacier-fed water originates in the 1,500 square-mile Juneau Ice Field. Crafted from Pale, Munich, Vienna and wheat malts, with Hallertauer hops and our own house yeast.

Pale golden color with ample white head made up of medium-sized bubbles. Aroma is sweet, grainy and some orange. Flavor is mild, malty and some more orange with a grapefruit and caramel aftertaste. Eventually some spice character comes out, with some pepper flavors on the back of the tongue. Body is medium to light with lots of carbonation. I’m no expert on Kölsch style beers, but this seems to fit the description fairly well. I’d say this errs on teh side of the malts though, since I dont see the hops being very prominent, and it feels like the taste doesn’t back up the aroma as much as I’d like. All in all though it’s tasty. VERY glad to see Alaskan Beers finally make it to Colorado.

Bottle. Pours a sunshine gold color with a very thin white head. There is citrus in the faint aroma. The citrus is repeated in the flavor with a nice hops/malt balance. Good brew, but I prefer a bit more character in my beer. Good beer for a hot summer day.

6/14/08 On draught at the Washington Brewers Festival. Aroma is very low with just hints of malt. Appearance is clear yellow with a low white head. Flavor is very light with medium noble hop bittering. Mouthfeel is light bodied with a resiny texture. Overall, easy drinking but lacking character.

12oz bottle. Gold color with a big, brilliant white head. Light aroma with fruity pear and spicy hops. The flavor has a nice clean malt body with light fruitiness and low bitterness, though enough hop balance to make it interesting. Pretty refreshing, but the fruitiness is a little much after the aroma belies a cleaner taste.

ON tap; seeing what style it is classified as, it makes a bit more sense. Still this was pretty poor. Aroma was ok, but really light; watery if an aroma can be that. Flavor was dry and grainy; a bit plain. Not much hopping and flavor. Below average for the style for me.
