COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Winter comes early in Alaska, so we release Alaskan Winter Ale in October. The tender new growth of spruce trees has been used for brewing in Alaska since the late 1700s when explorers sailed the coast of Alaska looking for the Northwest Passage. Alaskan Brewing revives this tradition, adding spruce tips to its Alaskan Winter Ale.

This is better than the last few beers I have tried from Alaskan. Nice color and aroma is sweet with barnyard. Sweet and watery. Thin body women....goood! Thin body beers......not so good. At least it is drinkable. Too sweet for me though. OK beer.

Crisp copper coloured body with a touch of a nutty brown glow and a nice, one centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of malt, caramel, toffee, nuts, figs and a bit of raisins - a touch of basement too. Medium-bodied; Assertive roasty malt with a lot of full caramelised sugar flavour, a lot of nuts, some raisins and a decent amount of alcohol. Aftertaste shows a lot of body with more depth in the malt flavours, but some noticeable with the earthiness and a little spice kick at the end. Overall, a nice and potent beer with a good complex flavour, fitting for the season without going over the top with an imperial stout or barley wine. I sampled this stubby twelve ounce bottle purchased from Village Market in San Francisco (Ferry Building), California on 15-January-2012 for US$1.79 sampled at home in Washington on a surprisingly chilly evening on 26-March-2012.

Copper color but had no head to speak of really, just kind of flat. The smell was very sweet with spices and an overriding maltiness that was a bit overpowering. Flavor-wise, the beer was pretty thick and malty sweet .

bottle-pours deep amber almost brown with a fizzy lite tan head around the rim of the snifter i drank it out of. nose is big dark fruits-plums, red grapes and lite muskgrape (isnt that what its called? ) flavors exhibit the big dark fruits mostly the plum aspect. short finish of dark fruit and lite carmel malt. lots of sweetness and a slightly flimsy body make this beer just slightly above average in my book. has alot of good flavors and i thought it was slightly better than its rating suggests, but needs a bit more body like full sails winter old ale to be really good. glad i finally got to get this one though.

12oz. Bottle: Aroma of malt, butter, diacetyl, and a hit of caramel. Poured amber/orange in color with no head. Clear. Slightly sparking. Full of tiny particles throughout. Flavor is light to medium sweet. Tasted of diacetyl, butter, and some caramel. Medium body. Dry texture. Average carbonation. Butter, diacetyl, finish is lightly sweet and lightly bitter.

12 oz. Clear, shiny copper with a small ring of bubbles. Mild aroma is toffee, cherry, biscuit and a hint of citrus and resin. Taste is cherry, apple, caramelized brown sugar, toast, and hints of evergreen. Finish is light spruce and mint. Medium body is sweet and a little too fizzy.

UPDATED: JAN 7, 2012 Pours a very clear, yellow-amber with little head. The aroma is a floral one, with the spruce standing out. Flavor takes some getting used to. I didn’t really care for my first sip, but it got better. There’s a strange, piney-malty sweetness caused by the spruce tips, with a bitter finish that’s not entirely pleasant, though it’s not really all that bad. Actually, on second thought, it’s really kind of gross.
