COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Winter comes early in Alaska, so we release Alaskan Winter Ale in October. The tender new growth of spruce trees has been used for brewing in Alaska since the late 1700s when explorers sailed the coast of Alaska looking for the Northwest Passage. Alaskan Brewing revives this tradition, adding spruce tips to its Alaskan Winter Ale.

Slightly sweet, with a bit of sticky hops in there. No spruce aspect in the smell, and just a slight, slight tinge of pine in the afterburn. Was hoping for a lot more in this.

Bottle.Pours with a lighter color than expected, more like a golden to copper color. Mostly toffee and some fruit in the nose. Flavors are of some grapefruit and caramel with the spruce noticeable in the finish. The body could be a bit more robust.

Clear beer. Filtered like crazy. Small head. Slight toffee aroma. Hard to pickup on the toffee, but it is there. Slight hop aroma as well. Just a weak beer in the aroma area. Creamy palate, but not VERY creamy. Has a caramel malt taste. Just bland to me. Slight hop taste, but nothing special. Overall, a weak beer with weak flavors and aroma.

UPDATED: DEC 25, 2008 Nice and malty with good warming ABV. Spruce definitely is detectable and gives a nice perfumy addition to the aroma.

12oz bottle. Orange color with a lasting head. Malty, toffeeish aroma with some spruce and light hops. Thick, malty body with caramel, toffee, and a minty spruce flavor. Full bodied and smooth. This is pretty cool, though maybe thats just the novelty of the spruce talking. Now I have too seek more of these northern creations out.
