COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Winter comes early in Alaska, so we release Alaskan Winter Ale in October. The tender new growth of spruce trees has been used for brewing in Alaska since the late 1700s when explorers sailed the coast of Alaska looking for the Northwest Passage. Alaskan Brewing revives this tradition, adding spruce tips to its Alaskan Winter Ale.

2000 edition - Medium Amber color, small head. Medium bodied amber ale, medium malts and somewhat hoppy. Ale brewed with spruce tips in the mash. Nicely malty. Good flavor. Spruce not really noticeable. Nice flavor anyway. Finish is smooth and crisp. Aftertaste is crisp and clean. Nice beer.

I liked it at first, but after I got through my pint it tasted slightly like Welches grape juice with a hint of plastic. Its too sweet.

very nice smell and color.. a very attractive ale by sight and smell... lost a little in taste though.. but would give it another try down at the brewery and see if it was better from the tap.

Wierd to say the least. I give it credit for tasting different than anything else, but too sweet for my blood

Not much winter wonderland in this brew. Has that bad preservative aftertaste. They sucker you in with a colorful label...stay away.

Nice color and ephemeral fine bubbled head. The ’gebot-defying spruce is distinct from a hoppy ’pine’ aroma but still short of assertive. Slightly sticky and heavy. I’m wondering how this might be next year if some more sugars convert. Heck, I’d also really like to see this less filtered or fined -- it may have lost some aroma.
