COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Winter comes early in Alaska, so we release Alaskan Winter Ale in October. The tender new growth of spruce trees has been used for brewing in Alaska since the late 1700s when explorers sailed the coast of Alaska looking for the Northwest Passage. Alaskan Brewing revives this tradition, adding spruce tips to its Alaskan Winter Ale.

Nice amber color. Sweet malt smell. Taste is malty with a some piney flavor, though not as pronounced as Iíd hope. More body than expected with a long finish. Pretty good, would love to try in draft.

Bottle pour. Clear copper amber with lots of carbonation, but a very small head. Aroma is caramel, toast, nuts, and spices. Light to medium body. Grass, nuts, and lots of spices.

Pours a pale gold with a thin white head. Aroma is caramel. Flavor is caramel, with a lot of sweetness and light bitterness. Has a nice body feel. I donít get any of the spruce that the beer advertises, but itís still fine.

Can smell the spices in this one. First snowfall of the season so I decided to try my first winter beer of the season. Got this Ina make your own 6 pack. Not too impressed there are winter beers that are better.

Pours a hazy orange with a white head. Aroma of fruit, toasted malt, and a bit of a nutty aroma. Flavor matches, very fruity. Almost a bit of a blueberry flavor at the end. Excellent beer.

If itís an old ale, but isnít high ABV, you might be disappointed. I was with this, as it had some promise but didnít deliver. The spruce notes are barely there and the overall taste, while not bad, shows nothing distinctive either. I donít need a pine tree to get some spruce, but a little more and a higher ABV would be nice.

12 ounce bottle into snifter, best before 3/15/2015. Pours slightly hazy bright orange color with a small dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of caramel, toast, biscuit, pear, apple, berries, spruce, herbal, grass, light pepper, light nuttiness, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready malt, spruce, earthy hops, and yeast ester notes; with good strength. Taste of caramel, toast, biscuit, pear, apple, berry, spruce, herbal, grass, light pepper, light nuttiness, and yeast earthiness. Slight earthy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toast, biscuit, pear, apple, berry, spruce, herbal, grass, light pepper, light nuttiness, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice robustness and complexity of dark/bready malt, spruce, earthy hops, and yeast ester flavors; with a great malt/yeast/spice balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, fairly crisp, and lightly creamy/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice old ale style. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt, spruce, earthy hops, and yeast ester flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Bottle, pretty Amber, slightly orange creamy head. Aroma is malty caramel, slight orange, faintly minty. Taste is malty minty juicy. This isnít sprucy/piney like I expected. Finish is bitter sweet. Palate is quite rich for a "light" beer, carbonation subdued.

Old ale? Really?? "pretty week beer underneath the spruce tips and all the other spices, but they are done well. maybe i just expect winter brews to be darker and/or stronger or more aggressive. pleasant enough, with a somewhat unique flavor profile. worth trying, at least every couple years."
