Pours a dark copper color with a very small white head. Aroma of caramel, toffee, vanilla and spices. Taste is sweet caramel malt with cinnamon spices. Pretty sweet and sticky finish.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Clear orange-goldenrod color, with small tan head. Pine resin nose, slight bitterness with a pleasant honey sweetness becoming the most prominent flavor. Light to mid body, crisp acidity and mid carbonation. Decent and mildly interesting ale.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bottle. Nose is fairly strong, with quite a bit of dark fruit in there and what is almost some christmas tree notes. Taste is a little sweet, and definitely has some dark fig in there. Odd. Not what I expected from a winter ale...

A: copper with a fleeting finger of white foam. This leaves a broken sheet of the same. Spotty lace. Excellent clarity.
S: Sweet, marzen style malts with a little bitterness to it.
T: Tastes like a Marzen oktoberfestbier with a hint of wood (spruce apparently). Nothing special.
M: Thin and smooth with light carb. Nice feel.
O: I seem to remember this being more satisfying in the past - must be my palate.

3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Toasted, slightly alcoholic aroma with very little head retention or lacing. Distinct, pleasant flavor at the start that may become a little forced by the end of the bottle. Proper serving temp a must.

Malt nose with a heavy brown sugar palate. Warm spices are a nice touch but overall It seems one dimensional.

We did a blind taste test between this and 4 other Winter Seasonals to objectively determine which one was best. They beers were: Deschutes Jubelale, Anderson Valley Boont Winter Solstice, Big Sky Powder Hound, Alaskan Winter Ale, and Redhook Winterhook. Check it out:

12-oz bottle in Albuquerque. Medium body with a malty sweet flavor balance. Full mouthfeel. Even dry/sweet flavor balance. Minimal hops presents. Pretty subtle "spruce" character. Overall, a nice full winter beer though.
