Winter comes early in Alaska, so we release Alaskan Winter Ale in October. The tender new growth of spruce trees has been used for brewing in Alaska since the late 1700s when explorers sailed the coast of Alaska looking for the Northwest Passage. Alaskan Brewing revives this tradition, adding spruce tips to its Alaskan Winter Ale.

Spicy flavor with a somewhat light body for a winter ale. Interesting taste on the front, but a little watery on the finish. If you want a drinkable winter ale, this is pretty good. If you want a full-flavored thick body, then try something else.

Bottle. Amber body with a short, off-white head. Aroma of caramel, toasted grain, pine. The flavor is moderately to heavily sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, sticky texture, lively carbonation. The spruce is obvious in the sweet finish. Average at best.

Draft at a small pub in MI from notes. Light gold with a white head. Hay and grass. Mild overall with nothing sticking out.

Bottle: The aroma consists of light-moderate spruce with some light caramel, toffee, and spice. It pours a transparent amber with a one finger off-white head that fades to a thin film outlined by a slightly thicker ring. The flavor starts with a quick dose of caramel. There are some light spruce/pine notes in the middle. The finish has a light-moderate gummy life-savors and light spice. It’s medium bodied with mild carbonation and a slightly sticky mouthfeel. Overall, the gummy life-savor flavors are too much for me.

Tap. Dark, clearish copper. Banana, clove nose. Really solid Belgian entry -- candi sugar, banana, clove.

bottle. Deep amber with one finger head. Medium malt with a bit of spruce sweetness. Mild hop bitterness. Interesting take on this style.

Orange-red, very clear. Smooth and light, crackery, fizzy and sweet but with an accumulating harshness. The spruce level is sensible. Not mind-blowing but it was gone before I knew it and I wanted more.

Dark orange copper with small white head. Hop aroma. Tastes more like a pale ale than a winter. Crisp and slightly bitter. Finish ends quickly. Don’t love it.

Very easy to drink, light malty taste, light sweetness throughout, nothing too complex, just a perfect winter beer you can drink instead of sipping. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
