COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Winter comes early in Alaska, so we release Alaskan Winter Ale in October. The tender new growth of spruce trees has been used for brewing in Alaska since the late 1700s when explorers sailed the coast of Alaska looking for the Northwest Passage. Alaskan Brewing revives this tradition, adding spruce tips to its Alaskan Winter Ale.

Poured clear, light amber, "shiney penny" color with a thin, light head. Pleasant pine/hop aroma and first taste. The spruce doesn’t seem as prevalent as in past years. It’s hard to pick out from the hops. A real pleasant mouth feel and mild after taste. One of my favorites. I look forward to it every winter.

Bottle. Poured a nice deep amber color, thin head, with the thoughts of drinking a Christmas tree. The spruce tips freshened the flavor and it held it’s own throughout the glass. Another welcome addition to the Alaskan Brewing Co.’s arsenal.

Light bodied and fairly easy drinking, a fair amount of carbonation with a crisp finish. Aroma and taste of brown sugar. The spruce is lacking, but overall a nice session-able wintertime ale.

My least favorite of the Ak brews but still likable. It is a complex blend of fruit and pine but somewhat varies from batch to batch.

This one has been holding me over all winter. The spruce tips add a delicate spice to the malt and a jasmine character to the nose. Thick and rich throughout, apples, pears and caramel compliment the floral notes up front.

Initial flavour of sweet blueberries without a tart aftertaste. A bit of spruce evens out the flavour. The finish is hoppy in an inoffensive manner--good for those who like flavourful beer without a heavy hops taste.
