COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Winter comes early in Alaska, so we release Alaskan Winter Ale in October. The tender new growth of spruce trees has been used for brewing in Alaska since the late 1700s when explorers sailed the coast of Alaska looking for the Northwest Passage. Alaskan Brewing revives this tradition, adding spruce tips to its Alaskan Winter Ale.

My Secret Santa bought this round. <P> Aroma? Not really no. pale copper with a well established white head. Has a sort of candy, sugar powder, bubble gum sweetness in the fore. Not getting any spice just that very sugary sweetness and malt.

Nothing of any interest here. Aroma is almost non-existent, flavor is basic and unexciting in every way. Thin head, dark beer. Pass.

Medium amber color with little head. Aroma of cheap imitation maple syrup, grape nuts and little else. Perhaps a little pine/spruce, but that may just be the power of suggestion. Flavor is a bit treacly with some dough aspects and mild hop flavor. Finishes sticky. A disappointing winter brew from a fine brewery that is capable of better.

Nice color and ephemeral fine bubbled head. The ’gebot-defying spruce is distinct from a hoppy ’pine’ aroma but still short of assertive. Slightly sticky and heavy. I’m wondering how this might be next year if some more sugars convert. Heck, I’d also really like to see this less filtered or fined -- it may have lost some aroma.

Darker amber with an interesting aroma of spices and citrus. Taste is spicy and very odd - quite off. I couldn’t figure out what was going on here and didn’t like it much. I’ll stick with their smoked porter.

Not much winter wonderland in this brew. Has that bad preservative aftertaste. They sucker you in with a colorful label...stay away.
