shigadeyo (1399), Southwest Ohio Area, Ohio, USA Jun 3, 2007 5/21/2007: Alaskan Winter Ale is a hazy golden orange color with a small, foamy head and a mild amount of visible carbonation. The aroma is sweet and reveals pale malts, vanilla, some alcohol, and maybe some nondescript spiciness/evergreen as well (must be from the spruce tips). The maltiness is somewhat sweet in the flavor. There are also undertones of caramel, toast, and vanilla in the flavor. This beer seems strong with some alcohol sensation on the tongue. The alcohol presence seems much greater than 6.4% ABV! The finish is a bit more dry and takes on a floral and faint evergreen) flavor. Overall the flavors and sweetness, and bitterness levels are balanced. This beer has a medium body and feels lightly viscous in the mouth, but goes down smoothly. Very good overall and quite warming!
12 oz bottle (B061007; 6.4% Alc/Volume) via trade with bitbucket in April 2007. Thanks again Bob. I appreciate you generousity!
alraicercsu (106), Ft.Collins, Colorado, USA Oct 1, 2008 Bottle. Pours a copper color with a nice white head. Smells malty and a bit floral. Tastes spicy with a nice sweet flavor. HoppyGuy (105), USA Sep 18, 2008 Bottle. Pours a clear copper color with a medium off-white head. Aroma is light, a bit floral and of toffee and caramel. Flavor is a bit spicy, with some sweetness from some berry. The spruce is there, but is an undertone. Just enogh hops to make it interesting, but not enough to drive people away. I’d like to pair this brew with pork tenderloin prepared with a marianberry reduction sauce. bager (2060), Copenhagen N, Denmark Jul 22, 2008 Bottle thanks to Zack. Almost clear and golden in colour with a medium sized head. Interesting but a bit weird. Notes of malt, marmelade, spruce, spices, hops and berries. Theis (2212), Frederiksberg, Denmark May 27, 2008 Bottle at home - tasting. Clear golden - white head. Spicy, berries, knækbrød, dryness, high dryness, hoppy, sweetness, marmelade, raspberries, spruce...... a bit wierd. hittheroad (1), San Jose, California, USA does not count May 27, 2008 Initial flavour of sweet blueberries without a tart aftertaste. A bit of spruce evens out the flavour. The finish is hoppy in an inoffensive manner--good for those who like flavourful beer without a heavy hops taste.
