4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Glouglouburp (4772) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - FEB 26, 2012
In short: A uber-hoppy blonde IPA with an unusual grassy/leafy/iced-tea hops signature. Excellent
How: Tap at brewpub, the day of the beer release (first anniversary pre-party)
The look: Almost clear blonde body topped by a medium white head with good retention
In long: Nose is an explosion of leafy and citric hops, wow, quite a bouquet. Taste proposes a very nice crisp honeyed biscuity malt backbone followed by an assertive bitterness that is grassy, leafy and blends in an iced-tea flavor. Finish is somewhat dry which I like very much. This is an IPA that really stands out from the crowd, at least the north-american crowd. I was told it uses an insane amount of Golding hops which is not the type of hopping we are used to from IPAs. Brewers usually either go easy with classic English hops or go crazy with American and new breeds of hops. This one went overboard with classic English hops and the end-result is a beer that felt very original even if it is basically just pulling the oldest trick in the book. Comparing this fresh “modern style” East India Pale Ale with the two variations that recreated the 19th century conditioning, all I can say is that I’m sure glad I live in the 21st century, for the fresh aromatic hoppy beers, the running water, the electricity, the modern medicine, the longer life expectancies, the free porn on the internet, the abundance of food. Mostly for the free porn on the internet.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 MartinT (6340) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - DEC 5, 2011
My Bottom Line :
Beautifully citrusy and spicy, this historical interpretation of an IPA remains delightful from aroma to finish, balanced out by intelligent honeyed cereals.
Further Personal Perceptions :
-This keg was a tad hazier (still nice to look at) than the cask version and didn’t have the same head retention.
-Obviously the cleanest of all three versions (no crazy temps and oak-aging here), this was not necessarily the most drinkable. Its hoppy intensity was fun but became harsh with time.
-Bitterness was intense in all versions.
-The overtly citrusy hop character is impressive considering the fact there weren’t any American cultivars used.
On tap at the brewpub.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20 Quevillon (2011) - Sainte-Thérèse, Quebec, CANADA - DEC 4, 2011
Drank on tap (12 oz) at the brewpub on November 26, 2011. Golden blonde, small head. A much more dry grassy hop arome then the cask, not as much citrus. A far more grassy and herby hops taste, as bitter then the cask, but with out the nice grapefruit taste. Definitely not as good as the cask one!
