On tap at SF Beer Week Opening Gala. Pour is dark golden with a small off-white head. Aroma and flavor are both of caramel, apples, spent grain, and orange peel. Finish is on the sweet side, it over powers the hops.

January 20th, 2012 - Even if all the other beers at a brewery are lacking, thereís almost always something thatís drinkable, even if it is totally unoriginal and even unlovable. The restaurant is closed now, but I would have recommended Alcatrazís Big House Red to drinkers absolutely desperate for a beer with their meal. The chocolate, sweet and malty aroma is appetizing, and it shares that cloying strawberry scent with one or two of the other beers in the taster line up. The flavor is pretty tame - slightly sweet, more of that artificial strawberry (almost like the flavoring on Swisher Sweets strawberry blunts) and then a plain, insipid aftertaste with a generic chocolate touch and a brief aftertaste. Yes, itís nothing exciting, but it might go well with a blue cheese burger and the ambiance: loud, generic, and filled with greasy food.

On tap at the brewpub. Itís a clear, dark golden to red beer with a small, light beige head. The aroma is a bit weak I think, caramel malts and a touch of fresh fruits and dried apricots. The flavor has some bitterness, literally saving the day, still not more than it need. Some caramel and fruityness too. Medium to full body, very smooth. The finish has a little touch of metal, else itís like initially. Nothing impressive going on here, but itís an honest beer anyway. 130903

Sampled at the brewpub on 2/27/2012. This amber ale pours a medium amber reddish color from the tap. Small to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is caramel, slightly sweet and malty. A medium bodied amber ale. The malts are caramel, fruity and sweet. The hops are citrusy and floral. Good carbonation. Touch of orange. Some malt sweetness at the finish. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

Sample at the pub. Rating #16. Dark amber color with a light tan head. Nice combo of sweet caramel and light hops and again, really clean. (1790)

Meh - I felt like most of the beer at Alcatraz was pretty mediocre - this one was no exception. This one at least had some body - a bit more aggressive malt and some nice hoppy bitterness. Red in color (of course?) and a thin white head. Not very memorable, but not terrible.

Draft at Anaheim location. Clear amber pour, small off-white head. Caramel, light bready malt, bitter hops. Boring, but one of the better beers at the place, sadly.

Draft. An amber beer with a thin off-white head. The aroma has notes of malt and caramel. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt and toffee as well as lighter notes of hops, toasted bread, and lemon, leading to a lightly bitter finish.
