British brewers are often criticised for not being adventurous enough but this beer certainly can’t be accused of that. The first question is what style is it? Is it a strong mild, is it a porter? The brewery calls it an ESB, but its not typical of that style. Whatever it is, its a very interesting beer. Deep ruby red colour. Smoky malt and bitter chocolate on the nose. More of the same in the flavour, but there’s juicy plummy fruit, earthy hops and dry malt bitterness too. Also some licorice. Full mouthfeel with some initial sweetness, but that just adds to the body rather than being cloying. Cracking stuff. cask (gravity dispense), Reading beer Festival 2005.

UPDATED: OCT 15, 2006 Cask Stillage at Riverside Park, Newark 28/05/2005 Dark and hoppy with some alcohol content. Some spicy aromas in this one. Crisp malty finish.

Handpulled at Babington (JDW) Derby. Deep brown to the edge of black, thick white collar for a head. Smooth and unremarkable - one of those beers that just taste good and refuses to be pigeonholed. Subtlety almost to the point of obscurity - warms to a slight winter fruit finish, dryness throughout, very easy drinking.

Cask@Reading BF. Quite dry. Subtle roast and caramel, slight brown sugar in the finish, with a touch of alcohol showing. Didn’t do much for me.
