2.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 argo0 (9222) - Washington DC, USA - SEP 16, 2009
(draft) Off-white head atop clear apple juice body. Aroma is moderately sweet, orange/grapefruit, light pine. Taste is medium sweet, grapefruit/pine, lightly astringent. Light-medium body, some "hollowness" in the body with lack of grain. Great for a gluten-free, so-so for an IPA, and I rated to the latter.
3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 hophead75 (2005) - Largo, Florida, USA - AUG 15, 2009
On tap at the brewpub. Clear golden in color. Nice hoppy aroma, citrus- orange, lemon. Taste: Although this was the best sorghum beer I think I’ve had, I’m not much of a fan of that grain. Moderate to highly hoppy flavor with sorghum.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Lubiere (6979) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - AUG 9, 2009
A golden IPA with a thin white head. Aroma of very pungeant c-hops, over an interesting grainy "malt" light notes of honey and herbs. In mouth, a strange lemony hops, with honey notes developping, herbal, grainy, bizarre, but good. On tap at brewpub August 2 2009.
3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20 JoeMcPhee (6959) - Toronto, ON, Ontario, CANADA - AUG 4, 2009
Tap at Vermont Brewer’s Fest 2009. Cloudy golden pour. Orange/grapefruit citrus and a bit of light honeyish sweetness as well. The flavour can’t hide the grainy sweetness of the sorghum but it’s not a bad try really. At least they’ve added enough hops to give this some character, but I can’t say I’m a fan of sorghum.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 VTHopHead (1387) - Barre, Vermont, USA - AUG 2, 2009
Draft at the brewpub - Poured a slightly hazy golden yellow in color with a medium foamy white head that held up for a while. Some small lacing on the glass. Aroma is medium of citrus hops with a hint of spice. Flavor is a bit unusual... initially its the classic IPA, with citrus hops and a hint of maltiness. All of that is followed up with a lingering spicy graininess that lingered for a while. While not unpleasent, the effects of the sorghum add to the mystique of the beer... certainly not your average IPA and not intended to be, of course.
2.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 MartinT (6340) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - JUL 19, 2009
My Bottom Line:
This sorghum IPA at first wowed with its citrusy, grassy aromatic acrobatics, but then puzzled as strong sorghum flavors battled with the rising hop bitterness, crippling drinkability.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A slice of foam covers the light yellow haze.
-This is another highly alluring Alchemist hop perfume!
-The finish is a blend of hop bitterness, sorghum idiosyncracies and vagrant tartness. Just not pleasant at all, and VERY long lasting.
-This is a rare miss from The Alchemist in my book; but I know the Celia Framboise is going to be much better...
On tap at the Vermont Brewers’ Fest.
