Pours a dark amber color with a thin white head. Aroma of pine, citrus, and bread. Caramel, bread flavor with pine, citrus and a bit of chocolate at the back end. Unique and tasty beer. Very nice.

On tap at the Alchemist. Pours a slightly cloudy almost amber color with a fluffy white head that shows some resolve. Smells of earthy piney hops with traces of bready malt deep underneath. Taste is much the same earth and pine that are barley sweetened with a bready malt that struggles to show itself. Medium body and level of bubbles with a sticky resinous mouthfeel. Great IPA, if the Alchemist had opened at 3 I would have had more than one of these and not gotten filled up across the street with Hill Farmstead beers.

On tap at the brewpub in Waterbury, VT. Looks like it’s the first review in two years. I really enjoyed this, and it was a significant departure from the Holy Cow. Poured an almost red, and smelled almost caramel sweet. The malts were much more pronounced in this when compared to Holy Cow. That doesn’t mean that it’s not hoppy though. I really enjoyed this.

A nice amber ale with a thick frothy off white head. In aroma, a superb c-hops, very floral, smells from far away, pinhey and rich. In mouth, a rich and smooth IPA, with mentol alcohol coolness, grapefruits, grains of spices, biscuitty malt. Rich and balanced. On tap at brewpub August 2 2009.

(Rating #2535)

In short: A great woody/coniferous toasted IPA. Almost a Dark IPA. Great tasty beer.
How: Tap at brewpub. Summer 2009 batch.
The look: Cloudy copper body topped by a medium off-white head
In long: Intense nose of resinous hops, toasted bread, citrus fruits. Very toasted malts without reaching roasted level (small grey zone). Malts have a flavour of crusted toasted bread with caramel. Rich enough body yet restrained enough to give a lot of room to the hops. Hops have a lot of dry wood bark, coniferous trees, resin and some citrus. This is a tasty beer. With beers such as this one, the much improved The Crusher, their regular Holy Cow, and the amazing El Jefe I now believe the Alchemist is the master of hoppy beer on the entire east-coast. And they really can stand toe-to-toe with the best west-coast hop masters. Named after a concept in Christianity relating to the return of Jesus. Not sure why, I’m an atheist. What sucks about being an atheism is that we don’t get many holidays

@VT Beerfest–on tap-pours a big retaining foamy white head and hazy amber color. Aroma is bitter citrus. Taste is bitter grapefruit hops/lemon-which is drying, plastic mouth feel. Too big, sipping.

Tap at the brewpub - explosive, grassy, piney hop aroma, with a huge, dry, woody character - very crisp, herbal, earthy simcoe hop flavor, balanced with a perfect malt backbone, not getting sticky like most - hops remain center stage, and keep the finish very dry and woody - reminds me of Sixpoint Gemini - nice.

6 ounce draught sample at the Vermont Brewer’s Fest (July 2007). Murky and rather dirty-dusky loozing bronze with a lasting creamy white head....aroma an intense mix of resninous PNW hops, lots of citrus...but also it seems to me something of a noble hop character, Hallertauer perhaps? could be imagination, but the dry grassiness adds a lot of interest....juicy, pungent and quite bitter throughout, cherry-apricot juice character in the middle....quite full-bodied, low carbonation, lightly syrupy. Another solid effort from Vermont’s IPA master.

Draft at the brewpub on 7/7/07 - Poured a darkish amber in color with a small off-white head that faded quickly. Aroma was distinct/strong of citrusy and piney hops. Underlying sweetness that foretells of a nicely balance of malt. Flavor is *big* with hopiness (yum!) and the anticipated malt balance is clearly present. This is one of my favorites that John has done to date. I’m hoping that this one comes back again and again and... !!
