Now that Piebalga no longer makes Sātāns, there is little competition in this arena.

Bottle: Dark brown, ruby, light head and nice lacing. The nose is light and sweet with cake and apricot. Soy sauce and licorice too. The flavor is sweet with roast and grass. Finishes thick, sweet, still a bit lacking in the porter department. Not sure what I should be comparing this to.

Pours dark ruby black with tan head. Chocolate malt aromas, smoked scents also figs toffee and light whispers of citrus. Toasted chocolate, sugars and figs on the taste. There is also milky caramel melting into the mouth. Touches of a distant smokiness throuhgout the taste, and hints of fruits-berries, apricots- towards the finish; which is pleasing. A nice warming feeling form the alcohol, and a good mouthfeel. A nice baltic porter.

50 cl bottle from Alko, Finland. Nutty porter with a strong smoky flavour. Almost like the forest has caught fire. But it is easy-drinking, fine with cheese. A fine beer.

UPDATED: JUN 19, 2007 Black pour big creamy almond head. Grainy smokey aroma. Flavor is a big sweet chocolate and caramel punch, very sugary, oats, nuts, roasted malts and some smokiness in the aftertaste with the sugar staying as well. As it warms the chocolate sugar sweetness really shines and just taste great. Very creamy mouthfeel making this go down very smooth and fast. The sweet milk chocolate is the main flavor but the caramel sweetness rides with it balancing it perfectly. Awesome beer ecspecially for only $1.79 a 500ml. 6 Year old bottle, Best by Sept. 11 2000. Pretty much still the same beer. Slight oxidation in the aroma. Flavor has a bit of oxidation but it actually gives more sweetness and a bourbon barrel touch to it and more coffee in there as well. Still smooth and easy drinking, very good and nice to see the differences with aging.

Rated 5/20/07: A Latvian Baltic Porter that came across well, but doesn’t stand out. Moderate aroma, gets better as it warms but is still tame. Honey roasted nuts with sugar and syrup, malty for sure. Enticing dark brown pour with a reddish tint, huge creamy head and mild lacing. This pours like a nice dry stout. Creamy on the palate, medium bodied that finishes sweet and a touch thin. Nice malt content, flavor is mild with brown sugar, milk, and chocolate with a faint smokiness. Solid, came across as well made and it was enjoyable.

Bottle: (Generously provided by beastiefan2k): Deep brown in color, looks a bit thin with a ruby hue. The head is tan in color and fades to a thin film. Has a somewhat cheap, mass-produced type of aroma with some corn, pale malt, and only hints of cocoa. The flavor is somewhat sweet. The mouth feel is slick, and a bit syrupy. Has a light stickyness in the malt profile with hints of caramel, cocoa, maple and later licorice notes. Finish doesn’t offer any balancing bitterness at all. Overall a bit sweet, but still somewhat enjoyable.
