Bottle from Eastern European shop in West Bromwich. Very dark brown beer with large tan head that reduces to puddles. Aroma of roasted malts and caramel. Taste is burnt malts, licorice, raisins and caramel with a little bitter coffee. Medium bodied. Good.

500 ml bottle into snifter, no bottle dating. Pours nearly opaque dark brown color with a 2 finger fairly dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of caramel, toast, raisin, plum, dark bread, brown sugar, light chocolate/roast, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance of dark/bready malt and yeast ester fruitiness; with solid strength. Taste of caramel, toast, raisin, plum, dark bread, brown sugar, light chocolate/roast, and yeast earthiness. Minimal bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toast, raisin, plum, dark bread, brown sugar, light chocolate/roast, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice robustness and solid complexity of dark/bready malt and yeast ester flavors; with a great malt/yeast flavor balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, moderately creamy, and slightly chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a nice Baltic porter style. Good balance and robustness of dark/bready malt and yeast ester flavors; and very smooth to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.

BOTTLE 50CL from rosenbergh. Thank you, Jan! Look: deep brown with red highlights, big beige head with poor retention. Aroma: burnt sugar, light toast/roast, grain and husk. Taste: starts rather bizarre light salty, then burnt sugar, some very light dark fruit, light peppery bitter finish. The finish has some light harsh phenolic notes.

Dark cola brown beer with beige big head dissolving soon, leaving lacing on the glass. Aroma has bready and roasted malts and caramelly sweetness. Flavor is sweet with salty licorice and roasted malts. Palate is full and soft. Finishes with a medium bite of bitterness, leaving a syrupy salty licoricy aftertaste. Good for a Baltic Porter. A bit on the sweet side but still enjoyable and well balanced.

A Baltic take on the Baltic Porter. My first Latvian beer, I had this in Helsinki, Finland. It is a very fine beer, the kind I had once in Croatia, and wish they would make more of in the Balkans. Good caramel malt meets roast flavor with a nice ash finish (yes, I like it when my porters have an ashy aftertaste). I’d buy this in Norway, and I recommend it to those going across the Baltic for beer.

Strong and sweet, usually my far-and-away preference when it comes to alcoholic drinks, but yet I don’t like it--too much caramel malt, aroma isn’t pleasant, palate isn’t balanced at all...too hoppy a finish as well! weighs the tongue down instead of enlivening it. (TGIF, RIX)
