Enjoyed on tap as part of a sampler at Ale Asylum in Madison, WI. Appearance is a whisky like brown with thin white rim. Aroma light, bit of caramel, little spice, faint. Taste is decent for the style, chewey, light prune, little bit of malt. Seems like a decent amount going on, my friend I went with didnít like it but since Iíve had the style in other varieties before, I kind of enjoyed it.

A purple-y ale dominated by plums and raisins in the nose and finish. Lightly carbonated and downright chewy once in the mouth, with a pleasant sweetness. Alcohol is well hidden. Enjoyed on draught at the Ale Asylum tap room.

On tap at Ale Asylum. Pours into a small goblet a very dark ruby, with scant brown and purple hints. Small off-white head, not much lacing to speak of. Nose is surprisingly muted, but I get candied plums, raw sugar, hint of nutmeg and other spices I canít quite place. Taste fairly well-integrated, with more dark fruits, more of a raisin presence, Belgian candy, and just a kiss of earthy funk. Lively mouthfeel from the effervescent yeast strain, but gives way to creaminess. Very little alcohol bite. Not bad.

12 oz bottle. Pours amber with lots of fine particles and a rather yellowy off-white head. Aroma has lots of cloves, bubble gum, and pear yeast notes, hints at something like caramel. Flavor leads again with yeasty clove, pear, and bubble gum, blending with a strong earthiness, nuttiness, a little toffee perhaps. Pretty tasty.

Iím in a dark bar - cloudy brown, bubbles around the glass edge, should probably clearer & more head. Nice sweet aroma - fruit, alcohol. Flavor mimics aroma -fruit, add some vanilla. Medium body, alcohol in finish. If a grand cry is in the Flanders red family, this needs work to fit the style. However, it is a tasty ale that I will have again.

Poured from 12 oz bottle into my Ommegang glass. Pours a sediment filled deep red with thin white head. Aroma is wonderfully full of belgian dark candi, malty sweetness, and a wee bit of alcohol. Taste is very sweet and full of malt flavors from all over the spectrum. This only continues to reaffirm my belief in Ale Asylum. Canít wait until they become more widely available.

Taster pour at the Ale Asylum Brewery. It was spicy and malty in a unique, rich bodied way. I enjoyed it and would like to see it offered outside of the brewery more often.

Draft at Old Fashioned. Filtered amber-orange-brown color. Thin, oily, non head. Sweet, mild, malty aroma. A beastly beer to be served by the pint. Sweet amber malt, fruity vanilla tones. Quite well executed, sort of like an unspiced Belgian Xmas beer. Creamy and drinkable, with some slight alcohol warmth. Nice.

Thanks to secret santa for this. Pours an auburn brown with a thin off white head. Aroma is sweet caramel and small spice. Taste is syrupy, loads of sweet caramel and malt. Nice beer.

12oz bottle poured into a tulip. Not sure what vintage this is. Purchased in Madison, Wisconsin in late January. AROMA: This is different, picking up scents of fruit and peanuts? APPEARANCE: Golden color, minimal head. TASTE: Slightly sweet, bready, fruity (almost like strawberries). I like the after taste on this one, some malt, a little sweet, and banana. PALATE: Medium bodied, creamy texture and the finish is long lasting with bready / banana taste. OVERALL: A decent beer that drinks real well for being 9.5%. There really is not hint of alcohol here.
