Really nice balance between sweetness and mouthfeel. Had a really curvy sort of heavyness, deffinatly present but not truly heavy. Sweetness was kinda the same way deffinatly present but not sugary or overly carmely. Usually not a huge scotch ale fan but like all styles of beer the really good ones make you forget all the ones you didn’t care for.

UPDATED: APR 24, 2013 Loads of malty, caramel with a hint of peat aroma. Looks like liquid leather, mahogany. Tastes much like it smells. Malt forward with a hint of earthy roasted malt. Enough carbonation to keep things lively and balanced. A oily, sticky, solid scotch ale.

Decent drink, though a little on the thin side. Flavor is typical of scotch ales but there’s a sourness that becomes overpowering if drunk too fast.

12 ounce bottle. Low aroma of smoked wood chips and molasses. Appearance is a deep brown-red mahogany, lots of lacing even though there’s practically no foam. Taste is ashy, tobacco smoke (maybe that’s the peat), sweetened barley, bordering watery. At least the abv is low key. Palate feel is pretty light, heavily carbonated, bubbly, watery. Overall, I’ve had better from Ale Asylum.

12 oz. bottle from arkurzynski. Pours dark amber brown with a quick tight khaki head that settles to a wispy film and collar. Aroma is sweet burnt caramel roasted malt and faint peat and raisins/dried fruit. Taste has more of the above with dried fruit caramel roasted malt and some herbal characteristics. Palate is medium to full with a slick yet chalky dry finish. Honestly, this is pretty tasty! Thanks Adam!

This is one that I just want to love, but it just doesn’t do it for me. Well that makes it sound worse than it is. I just have high expectations for this and it falls a bit short.

On tap at the brewery. Comes a dark reddish brown with a small tan head. Aroma of malt, fruit, and caramel. Taste is caramel malt, dark fruit, vanilla, and earthy. Smooth with just a touch of alcohol coming through. Very good.

Draft pint at the new brewery. Pours a just barely cloudy deep amber with good red and brown highlights and a small beige head. Aroma of burnt toffee, sweet caramel malts, cocoa, and toasted nuts. Flavor of sweet and toasted malts, more of the same toffee/caramel profile, cocoa, a bit of date-like dried fruit, and just a faint hint of earth and peat. Mostly the sweetness leads here, though. Medium-bodied, with modest carbonation and a smooth, sweet, then sticky mouthfeel. Solid Scotch ale.

Appearance: Pours out a hazed, amber-brown body with light, light tan-hued head.

Smell: Malty notes of toast, brown sugar, nutty-hinted caramel crust mingled with a scant fruitiness, a vague hoppiness.

Taste: Fairly sweet maltiness with a caramel character, nutty accents and touches of toasted bread. Sliver of apple, a modest helping of ripe plum. Low herbal hops, maybe a touch of spice, with little imparted bitterness. Nutty caramel and some warmth from the alcohol coming across on the finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium carbonation. Smooth mouthfeel.

Overall: A fairly decent beer. It’s not going to put in any overtime or work on holidays, but it gets the job done.

Sampler at the brewpub shared with ck1, thanks bro! Pours a rich dark brown with red highlights. Aroma has a nice earthy peaty caramel smell. Taste is a super sweet sticky caramel. Finishes sticky sweet and hangs around for a while. Perhaps the best scotch ale I’ve had - quite interesting.
