Tart and bready, this East Bay Sour is a funk forward lactic mutha that finishes nutty, malty with a touch of oak. Six months in the barrel gave the brettanomyces lambicus and the lactobacillus brevis plenty of time to build that mouth watering, puckering bite that we know youíve learned to crave. Wheat and Pilsen malts were "sour mashed" for 16 hours then paired with a touch of aged saaz in the kettle.

3/4 pint bottle acquired in a trade. Pours golden with a minimal head. Aroma is tart with hints of grass and lemon. Taste is buttery at once but slides over in a more tart citrusy finish.

Pour is a pretty still gold, smell of vinegar, yeast and sweetness. Taste is like pure vinegar, overwhelming and yeasty. I donít understand how that can be considered good

Bottle thanks to Ontape ! Pours a medium to deep golden color with a finger of white foam. Nose is tart lacto fuzz, some barnyard funk, lemon, soft wheat notes. Palate follows with a bit heavier mouthfeel than I would expect for the style. Round cream of wheat backbone, bright tart lemon and layers of horsehair and light barnyard funk lingers. Solid sour beer a touch off the mark for a berliner though.

Bottle: Thanks, Jeff. Hazy, light yellow-straw body with a small white head that fades instantly to a thin collar. Aroma is quite mild. Lemony & lightly lactic, light backbone of wheat, grain, & must. Flavor is nice & tart up front; lemon, white grape, under-ripe stone fruit. Mild hints of grain, hay, & straw. Finish turns kind weird. The acidity turns into a strange combo of cardboard, butter, popcorn kernel, & mildew. Woody lingering with those weird flavors. Aftertaste coated with stale popcorn. Kind of kills the vibe. Otherwise, itís actually alright, but Iím not sure whatís going on in the finish.

UPDATED: NOV 14, 2014 Bottle. Surprised at the fairly low rating, I think this is a nicely done BW. Pours a shiny, hazy gold with initial white head and rising bubbles. Smell hints at the tartness to come with some oak and brett shining through. Taste has a quick strike of puckering sour that cleans up pretty quick and gives way to lacto/brett funk. Iím all for it.

Pours a light orangey gold color with a little to no head. Itís mildly cloudy, sort of a dingy, dusky liquid. What bubbles were produced fade away almost immediately, but itís a Berliner, so thatís not a surprise. The aroma is odd. Thereís a lot of wheat, which seems a tad funny. It has a very bready, cereal-ish flavor. At first, there was a very nice tart lemon note and some nice funk knocking around, but that all dissipated or was overwhelmed by the odd graininess. It smells like warm, old, wet, moldy grain. The taste takes this same profile in a worse direction. It has moderate to medium sourness. It tastes like spoiled grain, messy funk and soured wheat. There might even be a little diacetyl thrown in the mix. Itís just a mess. Mouthfeel is oddly thick. I really need to stop buying Ale Industries beers.

Pours a hazy gold with no head. Aroma of funk, big funk, oak, lacto and white wine. Taste is sour, funky, oak, slight vinegar, vinous and fruity. This is like a hybrid between a Berliner and a lambic. Very good.
