3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 chriso (7063) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - NOV 4, 2007
Cask (gravity dispense), St Albans Beer Festival, September 2007. Another experimental festival special from this brewery. An unusual beer served from an unusual cask - an upright pin with the spile on top. Somewhere between a Stout and an Old Ale. Very dark, with a slightly oily consistency. Aroma is from the Stout school - chocolate and creamy malt, with coffee accents. More powdery chocolate on the palate but there’s a slightly sour, lactic edge introducing Old Ale characteristics. Light bitterness develops on the finish and carries through to the aftertaste. Tasty and interesting. If there is some liquor in here I don’t know what it is.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 reakt (946) - Greater London, ENGLAND - OCT 23, 2007
Cask @ St. Albans BF. Black and tan. Nose of malt, chocolate and coffee grounds, slightly sweet. Taste is much the same with some liquorice and fruity blackcurrant hints. Creamy but thin on the palate. In my opinion, plenty of flavour but not enough body to carry it.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 duff (5483) - St, Margarets, Greater London, ENGLAND - OCT 19, 2007
Cask@St. Albans BF. Aroma is slightly subdued, but shows some subtle roasted malt. Palate is soft, with some nice roastyness, and touches of licorice. Nice slightly chalky/dusty characters, and it remains quite dry throughout, with some very soft acidity and soft bitterness. Good.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 harrisoni (10067) - Ashford, Kent, ENGLAND - SEP 30, 2007
Cask gravity at St Albans BF 2007. Black with brown edges. Thin tan head. Nice dark malt aroma, liquorice tempered by hop. Tarry. Very good oddly like an old ale. Some stout characteristics. Some spice. Good beer. Nice choc. Very smooth. Really interesting.

A Mes rate:
Unusual top spike cask at St. Albans beer fest. Black and murky with a thin off white film. Aroma of coffee, slight malt and alcohol, very delicate sourness and an almost swety note but thankfully it stops just short of that. Flavour is more of the same, really nice tartiness to it. A little watery in the palate but still pretty good. A tough one to categorize so I went with traditional. Kind of a mild / stout / old ale mix. Interesting and enjoyable.
