Jim Moorehouse, Nate Albrecht and Brad Zeller, three pals planning to open a Chicago brewpub under the moniker of Aleman, won first place at last year’s Iron Brew homebrewing competition in the Windy City (judged by none other than Greg Koch, Jason Ebel of Two Brothers Brewing, and celebrated Chicago brewer, designer and author Randy Mosher). Their style-bending IPA artfully married the assertive tropical bite of Citra hops with amazing coffee flavor and aromatics to create something truly unique and exceptional. Serendipitously, Two Brothers recently kicked off a new adventure roasting their own coffee beans, and provided just-in-time freshly roasted java for the brew. The result is an innovative IPA that’s well balanced and intensely flavored thanks to the felicitous blend of hops and fresh roasted coffee.

Bottle:   Fireweed honey in color, very fiery, moderate frothy off-white head, decent lacing.   Wow, big coffee aroma, freshly ground.   Seriously, I dont get any IPA out of the aroma, just fresh ground coffee.   Very soft IPA aspects on the tongue.   Coffee still brings up the rear at this point, but not heavy.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Finishes with a very moderate IPA, slightly hoppy, but again the background is fresh ground coffee.   This is an odd duck, but it somehow works.   The coffee on the nose doesn’t come across as that strong on the tongue.   The IPA aspect could be stronger, but as is its not overshadowed by the coffee.   Only a little coffee aspect lingers with the bitterness.   Clean, smooth, and very different.   Coffee IPA, who would have thought.

22 oz bottle poured a vivid orange into a pint glass. Decent sized head that faded at a moderate pace and left light, spidery lacing. Pretty big roast coffee aroma with some earthy hop notes and the lightest hint of citrus. The coffee is also definitely the biggest note on the flavor profile, with some grapefruit and a nice bit of lemon rind and some definite caramel sweetness. Overall the coffee kind of overwhelms the hoppiness, but still a solid beer I hope they brew again someday.

Not much coffee and not much IPA here. Very light. Citra hops are lost here. I have had much better local coffee beers.

22oz bottle, pours orange tan with some lace. A mix of grassy pine hops and coffee aromas. Upfront malt nutty sweetness. Very earthy coffee flavors with a nice hop mix. Weird combination.

3/28/13. Sampled during CBC 2013, at Churchkey, I believe. Orange pour with a small khaki head that sticks. Citrus and coffee on the aroma, a nice balance of hop and coffee. Lightly bitter flavor, hoppy with just enough coffee. I really enjoyed this.

On tap at Malt and Vine, Tasting notes from 3/21/13 poured into 4 oz. Snifter sample glass pours a light orange color with a light tan head that leaves good lacing. Smells of coffee, citrus, and pine. Tastes of coffee and citrus with a slight hop bite in the back end. Mouthfeel was smooth and creamy with great carbonation and a semi dry finish. Overall I think this was a great tasting and unique brew. I thought the coffee flavor overpowered the ipa elements slightly though. Wish I could have found a bottle but they sold out before I could find one. At least I got to try it on tap during a Stone tasting though.

Has an instant coffee taste that is alright but nothing special. A drinkable beer but is missing something.

Bomber from Sam’s, Durham. Having been pleasantly surprised by my first coffee IPA (the Mikkeller), I was hoping for good things here. Fairly lively copper pour with a fluffy head. Nose is leafy one moment, bright the next, with the coffee pretty muted at first. Flavors are richer and fuller, with moderate chocolate and wood framing the slightly more assertive coffee flavors. Citrus in there but a bit buried, and something overall came across as a bit thin and artificial. It was decent but a disappointment somehow.

Drank at jimmy buffet at va beach. Clear golden pour with fair offwhite head. Smells and tastes much better than I expected. Coffee aroma and flavor are prevalent, but noy overpoweribg for yhe base sryle. Pretty tasty, but not something I feel the need to drink again.

Bottle. Very pretty dark gold pour with thin white head. Interesting aroma of cold brewed coffee, quite hoppy, much more than the few other coffee IPAs I’ve tried, coffee notes are vegetal, but quite roasty as well, not like raw coffee. Flavor of coffee, nice hoppy finish, quite fruity without being sweet. Med-full palate with med carbonation, dry finish. Tasty.
