Jim Moorehouse, Nate Albrecht and Brad Zeller, three pals planning to open a Chicago brewpub under the moniker of Aleman, won first place at last year’s Iron Brew homebrewing competition in the Windy City (judged by none other than Greg Koch, Jason Ebel of Two Brothers Brewing, and celebrated Chicago brewer, designer and author Randy Mosher). Their style-bending IPA artfully married the assertive tropical bite of Citra hops with amazing coffee flavor and aromatics to create something truly unique and exceptional. Serendipitously, Two Brothers recently kicked off a new adventure roasting their own coffee beans, and provided just-in-time freshly roasted java for the brew. The result is an innovative IPA that’s well balanced and intensely flavored thanks to the felicitous blend of hops and fresh roasted coffee.

dark amber, rocky off-white head with some lacing. nearly overwhelming light roast coffee, citrus, apricot, caramel. medium sweetness, medium bitterness. medium body, oily feel, soft carbonation. i like it a lot, but to be honest the coffee really comes off as out of place.

Coffee, cigaretttes and some fruit. Complex. Very dark orange draft pour at hopcat. Not bad. This style stumps me

I’m not a coffee guy so this is a pretty high score from me. Looks like a normal Ipa. The flavor definitely has some coffee but is also hoppy so it’s well-named. A strange beer, but would work for coffee fans I suppose, in small amounts, but I’d rather have one of their standard IPAs.

Pours a hazy, dark golden orange color with tangerine hues and a half finger, white foam head that quickly settles into a thin, lasting ring. Spotty lacing left behind. Intersting aroma with nice coffee/gourmet roast, sweet malt and very subtle citrus hop notes. Lightly roasted coffee been character along with caramel sweetness, toffee and hazelnut. Coffee and malt overpower the hops in the nose but there’s a bit of grapefruit and citrus rind. On the fuller end of medium body with more of a hop presence than expected. Still plenty of gourmet roast flavor with hazelnut, toffee, caramel and subtle lactose. Still, it’s dry, resinous and bitter with pine needle and grassy hop flavor. Faint tropical presence but the coffee dominates. Decently balanced and easy to drink but could use more citrus/tropical flavor. A lot of these collaborations have been pretty shitty in my opinion but this one is pretty good.

Bottle. Pours a cloudy gold with medium frothy off white head. The aroma is strong roasted coffee and tropical fruit. Medium mouth, nice roast, grass hop, light bitterness, really enjoyed this and hope they make again.

"I should just stop ever doubting Stone ever ever again. Those that think they’ve slipped have obviously not had the privelage of trying their limited releases, collabs and one offs. Every time another brewer seems to gain ground, Stone releases yet ANOTHER awesome beer. This is one. I’ve had Mikkeller coffee IPA and it was enjoyable, but not like this. Classed as an IPA despite it’s 8.7%, this drinks quite light and smooth for the abv. The aroma is dominated by coffee (think Surly Coffee Bender type coffee) with the lower IBU IPA rounding the aroma and flavor out with a subtle but refreshing blast of citrus. Coffee lovers should rejoice in this beer. It stood toe to toe with some big boys (Breakfast stout and Victory at Sea) as we transitioned from IPAs to darker coffee brews). Get it while it’s fresh if you can..."

Coffee hops, sweet malt aroma, the hops and coffee complement each other quite well. Great mouthfeel, starts off like a typical stone IPA meets immediately with sweet bready malt and finishes with a great coffee flavor. Not at all what I was expecting. Wish I had another bottle or 12. It doesn't taste like coffee. Just the aroma and finishing taste. Not acidic. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle... Clear amber ale with a small, creamy, white head. Decent retention. The coffee component of the aroma is subtle, but nice, and works quite well with this beer’s hop bill. Full-bodied with a creamy mouthfeel and busy carbonation. The flavor is an enjoyable, roasty blend of coffee and hops. They meld nicely and fade slowly in the finish. Great balance - not overly bitter. Bottle courtesy of biggsbowler!

[5259-20130426] Tap. Spiced coffee grains aroma. Clear, bright orange red body with a long-lasting creamy off-white head. Bitter malty hops flavour has a long coffee roast finish. Medium-full body. Aptly named, nice balance of hops and coffee but the roastiness throws it in a third direction. (7/4/8/4/16) 3.9

This beer blew my mind! I love a good IPA and coffee stouts are right in my wheel house but it never fathomed a coffee IPA that would actually taste good. I will search the rest of my life to find another!
