kmweaver (2398), Sebastopol, California, USA Oct 8, 2007 22oz bottle. Pours a hazy, bright orange-amber color; thin, light tan head with patchy lacing. Very pleasant, floral and fruit-driven aroma; some dried fruits, tea, and earthiness. Shows some citrus-laden acidity at the tip of the tongue; medium mouthfeel; dried red fruits (strawberries, apples) and candy sugar at the center of things, with a warm maltiness throughout; nice balance and very sessionable. Medium, candy sugar and light caramel finish. kwoeltje (1313), Manchester, Missouri, USA Oct 5, 2007 (draught - as Liars Brew ESB at the Liar’s Club in San Diego - I’m assuming this is the same ESB) Dark amber with off white head. Mild hop aroma. Flavor is biscuit malt with some hops. Angeloregon (2024), Portland, Oregon, USA Oct 2, 2007 From a 22-oz. bottle--Poured a hazy amber with brown burnished golden-brown hues. Nice froathy white head. NW hoppy aroma but not roaming far from traditional English bitter style. Fruity and slightly bitter in the finish. Great wholesome mouthfeel with an amazingly smooth finish. SamuraiArtist (292), portland, Oregon, USA Oct 1, 2007 Bottle: Pours a hazy amber/brown with a very sweet bread aroma and herbal hops. Flavor is malty and bready and also has some english yeast diacetyl buttery flavors with a light bitterness throughout and a hoppy floral english hop finish. brianjames1 (322), Northridge, California, USA Sep 15, 2007 On tap from AleSmith Brewery and from 22oz bottle. Excellent brew one of my favorites from AleSmith. Orange in color with small white head. Excellent hoppy aroma and great bitter taste. Only negative to this beer are that the 22oz bottles are hit or miss, sometimes they have carbonation sometimes they dont, AleSmith needs to work on their bottling. pnista (1008), Bloomington, Indiana, USA Sep 10, 2007 Slightly red brown haze with a thin white head, vanishing. Big citrusy amarillo? hops over a subtle but substantial malty sweetness, some caramel malt. A bit thin in the body, but not overly fizzy. Appropriate to the style. Sweet light malt, some caramel. Big amarillo hops? gives this a strong resemblance to Pride and Joy. Clean hoppy floral finish. Very drinkable. A little chocolate malt. stefanje (937), (Santee) San Diego, California, USA Sep 8, 2007 650ml bottle. Pours a slightly cloudy deep mahogany brown with an ample off-white head that lasts a good long time and has plenty of lacing. Aroma is light to medium in strength and has notes of citrus, malts and hops. Flavor is understated with nuttiness, malts, and some spices(thyme and allspice perhaps). Hops were inadequate for an ESB, this beer is not even close to my expectation for that style. Mouthfeel was a bit thin. Finish was long and malty and satisfying. Overall this is the first Alesmith product that I have not been impressed with. I trust that they will refine and improve this offering in the future. My criticism not withstanding, a very drinkable and like-able beer. jpm30 (1588), East Central, Georgia, USA Sep 3, 2007 22 oz. bomber bottle, history lesson and blurb on the back of bottle, sampled in a imperial pint glass.
Poured as instructed, leaving as much yeast as possible in the bottle, clear reddish copper with a large rocky, foamy pale tan head, good retention, settled into a creamy lacing, small amount of laced sticking.
A nose of fruity, pineapple esters, then toasted caramel and grains, floral, fruity, herbal spicy hops.
Velvety smooth light, moderate body, low, but firm carbonation, incredibly quaffable drinkability. Malty tastes of toasted sweet caramel and grains, dry biscuity towards the end. Fruity yeast, pineapple mainly. An distinct English hoppiness with a smooth, soft bitterness, orange rind, floral leafy and woody herbs. Finishes dry, caramel grainy and leafy, spicy hops.
Excellent ESB from AleSmith, near perfect, I wish this was available in Illinois.
