Sammy (3934), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Feb 26, 2005 somewhat bitter and not complex. But went well with various lunch dishes. Rather mild Malty and floral and understated fruitiness. Thanks Don for bringing back fresh from San Diego! egajdzis (3602), Spring Mount, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 13, 2005 Poured a hazy, copper color with a small, off white, bubbly head that left light lacing on the glass. Malty aroma, possibly some chocolate or roasted malt, and underlying citrus hops. The sweet caramel malts came to the front, balanced by fruity yeast, and faint hop bitterness. Smooth and quaffable. Kinz (2179), Glen Allen, Virginia, USA Feb 10, 2005 On tap at Alesmith, followed later by a bottle tasting. Draught had a bit more of a pronounced hop profile, but tasting notes otherwise identical. Pleasant aroma, faint roast and a hint of smoke, with a clear floral hop component. Medium amber appearance, good head. Taste matched aroma, although maltier than you would have expected considering the hop accents on the nose. Nice. bitter (1137), Henderson, Nevada, USA Feb 2, 2005 tiny head that dwindled quickly with an orange brown haze standing below.
nicely bottle conditioned like a true real ale. nose of mostly malt sweetness and slight butter nut. the maltiness continues in the mouth and gives you a toffee caramel sweetness. lightly hopped and slightly thinner then i had anticipated. more body on the palate then the co2 lets on. for this classification alesmith could do no better. truly a close resemblence to an cask english esb. which in my opinion no one else outside of england can replicate. if they would have made it a bit ’bigger’ would have pleasured my taste buds a bit more but for this style i think they are dead on. Hildigöltur (5109), København, Denmark Feb 1, 2005 Copper coloured. Quite hoppy aroma and flavour with a quite solid malt base underneath. Well balanced and pleasant. Ernest (4481), Boulder, Colorado, USA Jan 27, 2005 Head is initially small, frothy, light brown, fully diminishing. Body is
hazy dark amber, bottle conditioned. Aroma is moderately malty (toasted
grain, cookie), lightly hoppy (apricot, flowers), with a note of sherry.
Flavor is moderately
sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly
acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, watery/velvety texture, lively
carbonation. Another dull, oxidized sample (but from a presumably fresh bottle, obtained from a California source) from Alesmith, just as with fresh bottles of Old Numbskull and Wee Heavy I’ve had recently (also obtained from a San Diego source, off the shelf). I used to love Alesmith as much as the next guy, but something seems to be amiss to me... johnyvt (157), West Hollywood, California, USA Jan 27, 2005 Less hop bite and thinner than Alesmith’s Evil Dead Red. Dry grapefuit finish off of caramel flavors. A little grassy, but no overwhelming flavor. I prefer the boldness of Evil Dead Red, or even Rogue’s Younger ESB. Still, this is a nice session brew. DavidP (1743), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Jan 4, 2005 Hazy amber body with a small white head. Granola/caramel aroma, smells like some specialy grains I just used, Briess Caramel 40. The same sweet caramelly malts in the flavor are accompanied by a nice mouthfeel at the start, bu the beer stumbles in the finish. It has a nice herbal/citrus hopping but there’s an acidic bite - maybe it’s the carbonation. Bit dissapointed in this beer.
