3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 marvinpontiac (117) - Huntington Beach, California, USA - MAY 26, 2006
Nice rich, deep copper color and a very small, thin head. Just a little sweet and a little hoppy but a nice simple beer overall.

Not my first time trying, just my first time rating it. It’s a very nice ESB, although light on the bitter side. Pours a clear copper color with a tiny offwhite foam head that sticks around. Lacing is nice. Aroma, is difficult for me to rate after mowing the lawn....I just smell myself...This brew has a relatively simple smooth taste and mouthfeel. The flavor dissipates as quick as slides down your throat. No aftertaste. At first I thought this was denoted a beer without complexity, but thinking back to other esb’s this is more of a positive element of this brew. Another fine libation from AleSmith.

Bottle from Secret Summer Santa. Bad band-aid nose, oxidized and astrigent. Stale and Extracty, a touch of fruit, bitter, mildly. After breathing a bit, the flavors mellowed, lots of caramel with some fruit, a mild toastiness. Not bad. A little put off by the initial nose.

From the Bottle at Tom’s Ultimate Glasgow Tasting, Blackfriars 01/12/2007
Fruity and hop aromas. Poured lively with a large white head. Amber coloured fruity and slightly earthy flavoured with a bitter dry finish.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 DavoleBomb (1104) - Pennsylvania, USA - FEB 18, 2011
Poured into a pint glass. Got accepted to med school today, so time to celebrate!
3.0 A: Translucent amber brown color. Less than one finger of creamy dark beige head with below average retention but a good amount of lacing considering the original head size.
3.5 S: Grainy, and to a less extent bready, malts. Caramel, toasty, and maybe a bit nutty. Good, but lacking in strength.
3.5 T: Like the nose, the taste is a light as well. Caramel, toasty, and grainy malts are the strongest. Hops add a soft bitterness with an earthy herbal taste. Light general fruitiness.
3.5 M: Light body, perhaps too light. Good moderate carbonation. Could be creamier and a thicker body would help with that. Otherwise, okay.
3.5 D: A while ago I made the mistake of comparing every bitter to East End’s Bitter End (the 2nd running of Gratitude) and so very few have been able to meet the complexity and straight up great taste. This is no different. Anvil is a pedestrian attempt at a pedestrian style.

How is this a 100 in the ESB style? I was all geeked up to try this brew, but it let me down! First off..."sparkling clarity"? It’s a ruddy iced tea color. Foam retention? Ya know what, I think I got the wrong beer.
Anyway, aroma is quite appealing, with heavy toast, caramel/sugar, and pale sweet fruit. Flavor is wild ride, and not at all what I was expecting. Mouth-puckering bitterness comes along with champagne yeast and fruity hops. Balance seems to be way off on this one, lacking the malty backbone alluded to by the smell.
2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 warriorx99 (85) - USA - FEB 25, 2006
This drink pours a dark amber color and has a slight malty aroma and taste, but isn’t over powering. Although an ESB, it isn’t overwhelmingly bitter. I would call this a pretty decent beer. I would certainly have it again.
2.9 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 spikester (602) - Salem, Oregon, USA - FEB 18, 2009
Pours clear dark amber with a one finger off white head. Fair amount of lacings. Aroma is fruity almost perfume like. Fruity taste with very mild amount of hop bitterness. Smooth mouthfeel perhaps a bit under carbonated. Since there is no date on this bottle that I can decipher and given the good reviews that most Alesmith products recieve, I can only assume this is an old bottle. Overall fairly sweet, fruity, and just a touch of hops.

(bottle): Pours a light reddish brown body. Small light tannish head, quickly diminishing. Hoppy aroma, somewhat piney, somewhat maty, but not too strong. Malty, piney, acrid taste. Almost dusty taste. Maybe some banana. Watery & drinkable. MaltIness. More hops as it warms up. Too malty for my taste, but very drinkable.
