4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle (750 ml). Thanks to vissai for this one! Dark amber with a small/medium beige head and come lacing. Aroma is of oak with vanilla, bourbon and caramel. Taste is moderately sweet with bourbon, vanilla, toffee and caramel. A nice warming heat from the alcohol in the finish. Full bodied. Low to moderate carbonation. Textbook barrel-aged Barley Wine. Very well done by AleSmith again. Drinkable for the style.

Pours deep amber with burgundy reflects. Aroma is of malt, sugar, caramel, alcohol, bourbon. Taste is of malt, sugar, caramel, butterscotch, alcohol, very slight bourbon. Palate: Full bodied. Overall: Nice sugar: not too cloying. Alcohol not well hidden, but I don’t think it’s supposed to be. Would not drink a whole bottle, but this is a very good sipper.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
$30.00 bottle from Alesmith brewery, July 2013. Pours cloudy dark amber. Malt aromas with some burbon. Boozy caramels and brown sugars with some vanillas, and of course burbon. My bottle has experienced oxidation. This may have came from the barrel. Alcohol burn in the finish. Overall I was expecting more. I know every batch is different, maybe another vintage will be better.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. Clear dark copper pour, brandy like. Aroma of burnt maple, toffee, caramel with rich vanilla bourbon notes. Taste is sweet, intensely caramelized malts, rich sweet flavors even though the beer itself isn’t very sweet feeling of the palate. Another big ale gem by Alesmith, who have these styles down to a t.

Wow this barrel aging is fantastic, so sweet and caramelly with good hop bitterness to prevent it from being a diabeetus bomb

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: OCT 16, 2013 Bottle: thanks, Kevin! Seedy copper, overtly muddled brown and opaque with a long lasting, khaki colored foam. Sticky, deep aroma; prune, raisins, caramel, toffee, tons of bourbon and woody oak with some brown sugar and sweet grape in the finish. The intense sweetness of the aroma balances the heavy bourbon and oak punch nicely. Taste is grapes and prunes, lacquered in a mixture of brown sugar, bourbon, and spicy oak staves. Quite hot, quite sweet. It finishes with heavy bourbon, boozy oak, slightly burn coffee, sweet prunes, and brown sugar. Viscous, heavy, thick, and creamy. Very nice beer, but pretty damn strong... Get ready.
