WeeHeavySD (1711), San Diego (Hillcrest), California, USA Jun 25, 2007 Updated: Sep 29, 2007 First Rating of this fine brew. Second first rating of an 11th Anniversary beer. 1st and 1st=11 maybe. I don’t know just came to me. Super excited about this beer, was excited about it earlier in 06 when I thought it would be out and I’m still excited now. On to the review...Pours a really nice reddish amber with a 3 finger puffy semi stable tan head. The aroma is great very sweet and malty with hops there but not overwhelmingly hoppy like a dipa. The nose is very balanced and portends a similarly high quality brew. I’ve enjoyed evil dead red the few times I’ve had it and I never shy away from making a beer bigger. The taste is very very nice. Big bold malt profile very nicely balanced with a fresh hop feeling. There is a bit of sugary caramel molasses sweetness there and the hops round out the beer nicely. The balance is just right, as much as anyone can like hops its nice to have them subdued in a beer where they are not the main attraction. The mouth feel is great nice feeling throughout and a nice light mouth warming as well. Overall this is a pretty damn incredible beer. Thanks so much to Peter, Todd (for coming up with Evil Dead Red the basis of this beer), Bill and Matt at Alesmith you guys make killer beer are cool and damn modest all at the same time. Lastly gotta love the name, its perfect. (EVEN BETTER ON CASK)
footbalm (1212), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA Sep 3, 2008 Updated: Sep 4, 2008Trust me, if I would have wanted my kitchen painted I would have hired a painter. Ummm, beer paint. Rerate; Now that I have had time to clean my kitchen I am ready to add a few things. I have NEVER had a bad beer from Alesmith so I was taken aback by the wave of beer that splattered me. I really need to get my ego in check and take all my beer out of my windows and stop trying to impress my neighbors. hillfiiiiire (165), Atoka, Tennessee, USA Sep 1, 2008 Dark auburn color with an almost tan head that looks rather enticing. The flavor is a subdued hop character that I would assume got that way through a little aging. Definitely plenty of caramel malts come out as a result. The flavor has a wonderfully pleasant note of chocolate in it as well, which I wouldn’t expect an a red ale. I really can’t get over well the caramel and chocolate come across in the flavor either. It’s fantastic. It finishes nice and smooth a a solid creamy body. Guys at Alesmith have done a great job here. ketchepillar (252), Des Moines, Iowa, USA Sep 1, 2008 My favorite part of this beer is the chocolate. I love the unexpected chocolate in lighter hoppier beers. A little bit of alcohol in the aroma and taste, but not too much. Anise. Good looking beer. Palate is solid but nothing too special. Chocolate in the finish is really really good, but the hops aren’t that great. crowderm (159), St. Paul, Minnesota, USA Sep 1, 2008 Pours a thick ruby with a very solid, very persistent tan head. The aroma is caramel, sweet malts, and some very round, finely balanced hopiness. The flavor is similar, with more butterscotch and maybe a bit of peach. The hops and malt sweetness are just about perfect in terms of balance. The alcohol lends a bit of warmth to the finish, but the alcohol is otherwise hardly noticeable. Very hardy, creamy mouthfeel. Goes down velvety smooth. Excellent brew. Headbanger (975), Aurora, Illinois, USA Aug 31, 2008 750 ml bottle-Pours a dark ruby red body with anice tight off white head. Aroma of malt, caramel, sweetness, and hops. Taste of the same with some toffee and butterscotch thrown in. This full bodied brew is very well balanced and hides the alcohol very well. My first Alesmith and looking forward to many more.
