Black with brown highlights, sticky tan fine head. Bright high-frequency sort of nose. Fresh cut hay, smoke, vanilla, raw wheat. Some kind of fresh sawn wood...doesn’t smell quite like oak to me (though it well could be), maybe birch. Silky, raisin sweetness, a winey dark chocolate quality to the finish. Fairly light body for the abv, but full of flavor and not hot. As nice as this was, I think this would have the potential to get more integrated with a few years of aging. djtimeless (170), Florida, USA

Light spotty lacing. Aroma is toasted and caramel malt, light spice, and faint chocolate. Flavor is lightly roasted malt and light chocolate. Full bodied. Alcohol is noticeable in the finish. The beer comes around nicely as it warms a bit. A very nice beer. Hophead22 (1087), Redlands, by way of Wisconsin,, California, USA

Can def. taste the rosted malts in this one, warming alcohol in the finish. Very easy to drink, doesn’t lay too heavy in the belly. Awesome beer. GMCC2181 (856), Bear/Elkton, Delaware, USA

Can ALESMITH prouduce a bad beer???? I dont think so... Every beer that I have had from them is so "drinkable". This one was no different. Dark in color followed by an average head. Taste is a super smooth coffee like beer. Considering that I dont enjoy a cup of coffee, it is still a good beer. Texture was a little over-carbonated but only because I think it was chilled a little to long. Overall another beer by Alesmith that I throughly enjoyed. MakeItDrinkIt (66), Portland, Oregon, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 14, 2008 Super dark brown - almost opaque beer with a mocha brown medium to thin head. Aroma is nice roasty coffee and toffee, as well as some plums and other dark stone-fruits. Flavor is very big and dark - roasted grains give a bit of astringency to the initial coffee-like flavor, that soon sweetens a bit to more of a toffee and chocolate flavor, but never fully looses all of the astringent edge. This should age quite well, and I will revisit in a year or so... nimbleprop (844), SouthWest, Washington, Washington DC, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 12, 2008 Scored this bottle in a trade with hellomynameis. Many thanks Zac! Wine bottle pours a opaque black with a lacing, creamy beige head and a slightly watery consistency. Aroma is very inviting, chocolate, coffee, toffee, nuts, toast and cookies. Flavor is sweet, chocolaty, with black licorice, dark chocolate, toast, light rum, some light smoke, plums, figs, and some very light citrus on the tail end. Finish is like a sweet, malty chocolate milk shake and just a little chalky. Delicious, very drinkable, a real winner. cgarvieuk (4171), Edinburgh, Scotland

Very deep brown with a hint of red ... deep soft smooth roast and chocolate ... rich toffe and a bit over vanilla. (most of the Dark alesmith seem to have a fair bit of vanilla) ... little smokey peaty whisky ....
