Commercial Description:
The third offering in our series of Decadence Anniversary Ales, is a big, rich Imperial Porter. Brewed to the parameters of a classic Porter, Decadence 2007 has the intense aromas of dark malt and chocolate complimented by a lusciously smooth mouthfeel. The flavor is rich and malty, and balanced with just the right amount of English East Kent Goldings hops. Pours dark brown to near black with light brown head. Nose is fairly full with chocolate, roasty aromas, and slight fruit as well. Palate is again filled with chocolate, roasted malt, and some dark fruits. Somewhat light bodied though, and low carbonation. Higher alcohol is noticeable.

courtesy of ibrew2or3. Thanks a lot Dave for the vertical epic. Pours dark brown, off white head with golden lacing. Lots of roasted malts, chocolate and some coffee. Some light dark fruits notes. Nothing to say here, this is one epic beer, boozy that coates the palate with malt goodness and some faint notes of bitter hops.

750mL Bottle. Thanks Andy! Nice, rich, molasses-filled chocolatey aroma. A bit of refined brandy. Smooth. Creamy. Pours a pitch black with a creamy freshly poured coffee and cream head. Flavor is well rounded and dense. Such a solid AleSmith porter. There’s a mash of chocolate, clean roast, and a bit of pine sap. Molasses continues to come through. This a really solid Imperial Porter. It’s so AleSmith style, in that it’s clean, the house yeast is distinct and delicious, the malt flavors rich, detailed, and complex. Balanced. The roast really drys out the sugars. AleSmith malts like nobody else and I can taste it because there isn’t other crap in the way. Fantastic!

Wow this beer was awesome. Bought from south bay drugs back in 2007. Popped it this weekend. The nose was chocolate, roasty, and coffee. Age has done this one well. I wished I had another bottle to try it next year

Aroma is sweet caramel, chocolate, light fruit, some bitter notes. Taste is very chocolate, with some fruit, and coffee. Some astringent notes as well. I’m not sure how well this has aged. Overall, the few off notes don’t detract greatly. After reading through some of the other ratings, I’m not sure if this isn’t common. Overall, a good porter that has many complex flavors.

Very black, nice tan lingering head. Aroma is off crystal malts, some melony fruit business associated with very high ABV stouts, some burnt toast. Flavor starts similar to the aroma, but quickly is overwhelmed by some alcohol hotness, but mainly this gross hot melon fresh fruit junk that made DFH WWS undrinkable, some chocolate also accompanies this section and continues through the finish helping it along. It’s not nearly that strong but still enough to bring down an otherwise incredible beer. This middle part of the beer is definitely the weak spot, but I am nevertheless very impressed by the multiple stages Alesmith beers seem to go through. The most remarkable thing about this beer is undoubtedly the finish. It starts with some alcohol and more of the middle junk but soon very slight hop bitterness comes in, but it soon evolves into this very very roasty, burnt toast. Sooo much burnt toast, with a little bit of chocolate. It’s good. The chocolate comes out more and more as it warms, balance this beast and making her better and better. Palate is solid, good carbonation level, silky smooth, good body, slight alcohol burn. Actually right between 4.0 and 4.1, but I’m giving it the benefit of the doubt thinking about 6 more months would make it perfect. Flavor > aroma.
