4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20 Naven (999) - Poway, California, USA - APR 4, 2008
Bottle. Dark Dark brown color. Aroma is chocolate, malt, smoke and brown sugar. Flavor is just incredible. This is a huge beer. Very rich, very flavorful. A little heat, but still pretty drinkable. I love porters, but haven’t had a very good one in a while. This beer reminded me why I love Porters. I believe I like this a little better than the 2006 offering.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 grimreeser (797) - Minnesota, USA - APR 4, 2008
Pours dark brown with a good sized tan head. Aroma of chocolate, slightly nutty, a little smoke, and a little bit of floral hops. Nice sweetness, enough of a bite to back it up.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 awaisanen (1312) - Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, USA - APR 4, 2008
From a 750mL Bottle. Dark brown pour, mostly transparent, with edges of ruddy tan and a thin head of
creamy beige. Aromas of cocoa and dark chocolate fudge with a deep, nutty almond complexity. Minimal roast, but
lots of chocolate. Subtle whiffs of earthy hops as well. There’s almost a hint of roasted prune in there as
well, but everything is clean and fruitiness is minimal. Medium-full bodied, softly carbonated mouthfeel with a
rich, malty texture. Moderately roasty malt flavors up front on the palate, along with more dark chocolate, but
free of any unpleasant roast bitterness. Some caramel, toffee, and coconut flake subtleties poke through as well.
Toward the finish, an earthy, herbal moderate hop bitterness starts to emerge, building in intensity into the
finish, where it successfully dries up any residual malt sugars from the palate. The hops tend to get a bit
planty and overly bitter in the finish (they are contributing minimal flavor complexity), but I’d imagine this
will retreat some with age. Great malt bill.
4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 IrishBoy (3334) - Bakersfield, California, USA - APR 2, 2008
Should have drank it last night; rating #5 750 ml bottle I got from the BA Release party! Nose is rich roasty coffee, chocolate, and some grassy hay and a bit of floral! Black with rusty edges and a big tan head that laced heavily on receding; flavor was hoppy bitterness and a pepperiness at the back of my throat, along with the coffee, roast, and chocolate; finish is nice and bitter chcolate and a bit of alcohol warmth! Excellent!

UPDATED: NOV 17, 2008 Firkin at SD Brewer’s guild ups my score by .2 JohnC beats me to the punch so to speak, and here I am doing rating 2, oh well, I’ll live I am drinking this after all. Bought at the brewery today, one of my bottles, not my girlfriend’s but shared with her. I’ve been waiting with baited breath for this beer. Beautifal Pour, black with a 2 and half finger tan head. Nose is sweet and chocolatly with lots of big malt. Wow, sweet, choco malts and some bitterness on the backend. Extremely smooth, very very drinkable, alc is completely hidden. Aftertaste is really nice and big and keeps malt on the back of my mouth. This did not disappoint one bit. It is a damn good beer and I’m glad to wish Alesmith congrats on another year with this beer and keep up the good work with the expansion.
3.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 JohnC (2910) - Mission Viejo, California, USA - APR 1, 2008
Pours an opaque brown with a one inch long lasting off white head. The flavor is malty with chocolate notes. It finishes smoothly and dry. 10% ABV? no way! I’m sure this will hit me in about an hour. I want to retry this one in about 6 months to see how the flavors develop.
