3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 riversideAK (4553) - Shoreline, Washington, USA - NOV 25, 2010
Nose has soft notes of oxidation but smells very nice with lots of chocolate and coffee notes. Some dark fruit and earthy notes peak through as well. Pours dark brown with a thin head, nice reddish hues in the light. Flavors mainly of dark chocolate and roast with hints of coffee and earth. Alcohol warmth peaks through. I am assuming this was probably a little more assertive when fresh, but age mellowed this one out and it was still a pleasure to drink.

Bottle shared, thanks to jhenry04 I believe, at a tasting. Pours pretty much black in color with a small tan head leaving a little lacing on the glass. The aroma is nice and rich - basically like the -bal aged version without the bourbon and -bal, with the base beer coming through more strongly, believe it or not. Roast, dark chocolate, and coffee. The flavor is also that of a strong, well-done classic porter with big dark chocolatey notes, roast, and slight caramel sweetness. Maybe even some wood, even though this wasn’t -bal aged. Smooth and creamy on the mouthfeel with medium-full body. A great beer this one is. Hope they brew it again.

A: The pour is a very dark brown with a thin off-white/tan head.
S: Such a rich, chocolately aroma to this beer that is fitting of the name Decadence. Roasted malts and coffee provide a bit of a balance, but the chocolate is really the star.
T: The flavor is reminiscent of a tootsie rolls. Sweet and creamy chocolate with some caramel, coffee and roasted malts. I wish I could say more, but the flavors here are simple and done extremely well.
M: The body is on the full side of medium with a really rich and creamy feel on the tongue.
D: My favorite of all the Decadence beers, and the regular is much better than the bourbon barrel one--much smoother and easier to drink.

Bottle. Black with tan creamy head. Aroma is rich dark chocolate and lactic creamy with notes of cocoa powder, like an Irish chocolate coffee with cream and a shot of Jamison, but also with a sharp and maybe lightly tart fruit, like a green apple. Taste is chocolate double sin cake with a huge rum sauce that sticks around through finish (big time like there was too much rum in the rum ball--your drunk at family christmas.) It finishes liquor burnt and chocolate...pretty thick the whole way through. As it warms, comes more boozed and thinner chocolate and a more burnt roasted thing going on and lightly spiced. I thought it was a totally smooth subtle charmer upon first sip, but as i got to know him, and as he warmed, I began to realized he’s a boozed, chocolate, bad b^t#c!

bottle courtesy of john tran, thanks a million man! great aroma, amazing imperial porter! very sweet, but not cloying at all, more like candy. a delious roasty, candy with notes of tobacco, mollasses, chocolate, prunes, figs, slight black cherry and loads of other delacies and exotic treats. exquisite beer, beautifully balanced after more than 3 years. just a touch of drying and cherry like sourness going on underneath, i mean very subtle, but there. glad i finally literally stumbled across this!

In short: A rich chocolaty roasted stout/porter. A simple but superior example of the style.
How: Bottle 750ml. A few times. This rating for a bottle a little over 2 years of age drank side-by-side with its BA sister version.
The look: Black body topped by a medium tan head with good retention
In long: The intense nose is like a big rich fattening chocolate cake with booze. Taste is simple but very satisfying. Medium roasted, chocolate, some black coffee, Nutella™. Nice coffee bitterness. Sweetness level is rather high but the beer remains very drinkable and I went through a 750ml easily. Great mouthfeel. Body is as full as full can be and the carbonation is lively. Another splendid beer entry in the non-barrel-aged Alesmith Decadence lineup. The Morality Squad and I agree on something, I really enjoy Decadence.

Bottle shared with bigmmartin and ewestern. Aroma is sweet malts, lactose, and chocolate. Notes of roasted malts and a bit, tiny bit of coffee. Palate is creamy and smooth. Flavor brings out a chocolate milk quality. Vey good, thanks Eric.

Let this guy sit for about three years before actually getting around to opening it. Time to see if the experiment was worth it. Pours out nearly pitch black with a small but deep brown head. Aromas of dark chocolate, coffee, marshmellow, and toast strike you as you pour. Head quickly goes away but light carbonation remains throughout the drink. At first I sampled this beer too cold and I knew it, very sharp of coffee and roast and nothing else (strange becuase the beer was not brewed with coffee). However, as the beer warmed the harshness went away completley and the beer opened up into something really really good. Chocolate is huge in this one but not sweet at all, a light roastyness finishes the beer and the body on the beer is thicker than expected. Very good.
