Alesmith’s Decadence Anniversary Ale was originally brewed in 2005 to celebrate our first decade in business. The brewers at Alesmith had such a great time concocting Decadence that they decided to make it an annual event. Alesmith 2008 is a traditional English-style Barleywine. Only the finest floor-malted barley and English hops were selected, in addition to a true top-cropping English yeast. Intensely malty and overflowing with flavors of caramel and toffee. Decadence 2008 showcases the very best of this classic English style.

Big thanks to Deuane for busting this one out after our MD/DE trip.

A - Pours ruby tinged brown with a small one finger tall white head leaving spotty lace down the glass.

S - Smells of sweet caramel malts, candied sugar, faint hop bitterness, and some light tartness. Not too bad but I have had better.

T - Starts off with lots of caramel sweetness slowly giving way to a mix of toffee, candied sugar, dulled hop bitterness, and the light funk from the nose. The finish is a mix of sweetness and light booze heat, lingering on the pallet for a short period of time.

M - Medium body and flavor with moderate carbonation. Sweet feel with only a tiny bit of booze creeping in toward the end of the glass.

O - This one was OK. The flavors were all there but it was a little muddled. I wouldn’t mind trying the BA version in the future but I wont be actively seeking it out.

Bottle at home. Brown and bronze color with a cola-like head. Sweet aroma of caramel, cherries and a hint of coffee and cinnamon. Big flavor with some tartness at first but then settles into some warming, boozy sweetness. Alcohol is well hidden. Fine.

[My bottle (750ml) shared with HogTownHarry, GregClow, JoeMcPhee, jercraigs & mabel -- c/o Glouglouburp] Pours a murky reddish brown with a spare semi-lasting bubbly white head. Aroma of dark fruit, light hops, caramel malt, some wood and some alcohol. Flavour of dark fruit, raisins, hops, wood and a long bitter finish. Really good stuff, it held up well.

750ml bottle shared by blankboy with me, gregclow, jercraigs, mabel and joemcphee. Thick-looking brick red slightly muddy pour, smallish off-white bubbly head. Aroma - alcohol, tart fruit, floral goodness. Taste - thinned out some (aged? oxidized) - still a good BW ... tart though. Thick, acidic, mildly carbonated, a little sour - very good still

750 ml bottle on a couple occasions. Pours a dark copper/reddish brown color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have the sweet caramel toffee notes I like in an English BW, some dark fruits and light earthy notes to the finish. The tart character from the "infection" was not expected, but did not really bother me that much either. I wish I could have had this fresh to compare.
