Originally brewed in 2005 as the first in our annual Decadence series, AleSmith Olde Ale follows the tradition of classic British-style Old Ales. This rich, malt-forward ale showcases soft notes of currants and dried fruit along with complex dark sugars, all of which are balanced by a subtle bitterness derived from the addition of traditional English hops. AleSmith Olde Ale is ready to be enjoyed now or it can be aged upwards of twenty years to further enhance its amazing depth of flavor. A hearty ale designed to please Bacchus himself!

Dark reddish-brown pour with a brown head. Aroma is dark fruit, sweet. Taste is dark fruit, malty, a little leathery, a little dry. Love to age another to see how it weathers. Low carbonation. Tasty beer. OK lacing.

July 10th, 2013 - I had the pleasure of enjoying this beauty at the brewery itself - a dark, sweet sultry beer which is RIGHT inside of Alesmith’s bailiwick. I trust these guys to do dark beers well, and they follow through with their Old Ale. I’m covering both versions in this review: a draft and a cask. Both smelled similarly, with a dark, clove riddled scent. The flavor on the draft version is chocolatey, malty, boozey and coated in molasses - like when sugar on a rich, dark chocolate bar begins to crystallize. It’s the pure essence of dark and sweet. The cask smells much like the draft, but the flavor is remarkably different. Here the palate is obviously flatter, and strikes out on a less sweet and sugary path, tasting more of teriyaki and tempura sauces with a savory quality that complements the sweet. Both are excellent beers, and excellent contributions to the tap list.

Tap at BrewDog Manchester. As ’Olde Ale’. Near black with a tan head. Aroma reveals itself slowly but is fairly complex. Toffee, nuts, coffee and praline show up at one time or another. Taste is lightly toasted caramelised sugars with a hint of fruit; nice but not as seductive as the aroma. Not nearly as thick and cloying as I expected. Good showing, but fell a bit short of my expectations.

Labelled as "olde ale". Pours dark amber with a beige head. Aroma of dark sweet malts, caramel, dates, figs, prunes, toffee, chocolate, nuts (hazelnuts) and a weak hint of fresh leather. The taste has some weak roast, toffee, weak nutty feel, some bitter hops, dark dried fruits, chocolate, a hint of leather and some dark sweet malts. Really nice old ale indeed!
