COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Originally brewed in 2005 as the first in our annual Decadence series, AleSmith Olde Ale follows the tradition of classic British-style Old Ales. This rich, malt-forward ale showcases soft notes of currants and dried fruit along with complex dark sugars, all of which are balanced by a subtle bitterness derived from the addition of traditional English hops. AleSmith Olde Ale is ready to be enjoyed now or it can be aged upwards of twenty years to further enhance its amazing depth of flavor. A hearty ale designed to please Bacchus himself!

UPDATED: AUG 18, 2015 2005 Bottle aged approximately one year.
Raw, fresh and messy in the nose, it certainly has that unpasteurized, unfiltered feel to it that is so appealing about alesmith. Unfortunately, the hops are decidedly obnoxious and burst forth with cherry, lychee, grapefruit and orange peel notes, dominating the aroma and limiting the malt presence to a sugary chocolate-meets-caramelized raisin. The flavor, then, is not surprisingly heavy on the hops and Im amazed at how bitter and bold they are after a year in the bottle. Oranges and ruby red grapefruit dominate the opening, with a wash of toffee in the middle that is in turn enveloped by staunch bitterness and alcohol on the end. Low carbonation, and fat malts lead to a typical hop lovers mess but as usual, I dont approve. Would be more interested to try a bottle with 3 years of age on it now. Interesting, anyways, and wholesome, but too messy for me.
2010 Decadence bottle drunk 8/14/15.
Well, the hops certainly weren’t a problem this time and as far as old ales go, it does have some enjoyable malt flavors of toffee, caramel, plums, raisins, vanilla and the alcohol somewhat dries it out. But in the end, the oxidation, combined with just too much booze and soggy-sweet flavors just dosent have any appeal for me whatsoever. Scored the same, but for different reasons.

05 Decadence. Pours brownish with a beige head. Small. N: dark english barleywine. So smooth, light roast, Heavy caramel and prunes. Great! T: so creamy and well.. Decadent.? Caramel and bruised fruit. Drinks perfect for a 10 year old beer. Aftertaste is semi drying but still heavy on the dark sweet fruits.

Deep reddish mahogany, quite clear. Small tan head. Strong apple, fruit nose. Caramel, buttery notes. Quite a bit of bitterness, strong underlying sweetness. Very upfront alcohol content. Heavy, oily body. Really good. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Sampled from a 750 ml brown bottle this beer poured a dark brown color with red highlights and a large creamy-soapy orange-brown head that lingered and left good lacing. The aroma was sweet with raisins, plum, pear, brandy and molasses. The flavor was sweet with toasty malts, molasses, cherry, anise, raisin, fig, brandy, toffee and a touch of a medicinal presence. Long finish. Moderately full bodied. Excellent.

medium dark brown ruby with plenty of cream. Aroma raisins, currants, booze caramel ginger. Tastes of dark rum blackstrap molasses. Alesmith’s super clean cut style makes this sorta boring to drink. not enough funky fruitness.

It pours a reddish brown with a light brown head that has plenty of carbonation. As it settles, it is fairly clear. It has sweet aromas highlight by fruit, caramel, molasses, nuts, and notes of sherry like qualities. It has flavors of caramel, chocolate, nuts, molasses, there are some fruity esters that are like dark fruits (plum like), and hints of sherry like qualities. As it warms, the sherry like qualities are more vinous. The nutty and chocoalte flavors become more prominent. It has a full body and is somewhat chewy with a quality alcohol warming.

Rating #1545 - 20.03.2015 - Birthday Brew Tour - On tap at Alesmith. Rich dark brown-black pour with a weak white head that bubbles away quickly, spotty lacing. Aroma is earthy - presence of peat smoke, toasted barley, chocolate, coffee grounds.Mouthfeel is clean, low carbonation, medium alcohol warmth. Taste is a depth of chocolately, nutty roast malts, ripe fleshy berry and currant balanced by a bready, sappy chewiness from the hop presence. Wicked brew.
