Originally brewed in 2005 as the first in our annual Decadence series, AleSmith Olde Ale follows the tradition of classic British-style Old Ales. This rich, malt-forward ale showcases soft notes of currants and dried fruit along with complex dark sugars, all of which are balanced by a subtle bitterness derived from the addition of traditional English hops. AleSmith Olde Ale is ready to be enjoyed now or it can be aged upwards of twenty years to further enhance its amazing depth of flavor. A hearty ale designed to please Bacchus himself!

UPDATED: FEB 1, 2014 2005 Bottle aged approximately one year.
Raw, fresh and messy in the nose, it certainly has that unpasteurized, unfiltered feel to it that is so appealing about alesmith. Unfortunately, the hops are decidedly obnoxious and burst forth with cherry, lychee, grapefruit and orange peel notes, dominating the aroma and limiting the malt presence to a sugary chocolate-meets-caramelized raisin. The flavor, then, is not surprisingly heavy on the hops and Im amazed at how bitter and bold they are after a year in the bottle. Oranges and ruby red grapefruit dominate the opening, with a wash of toffee in the middle that is in turn enveloped by staunch bitterness and alcohol on the end. Low carbonation, and fat malts lead to a typical hop lovers mess but as usual, I dont approve. Would be more interested to try a bottle with 3 years of age on it now. Interesting, anyways, and wholesome, but too messy for me.

Picked up a two year vertical at the brewery (skipped the package that included a glass). Have tried the 2015 bottle and on tap. Excellent example of style. Malt backbone hides the alcohol well. This is a great strong ale. Notes of carmel and bread with very little hoppiness. Looking forward the the 2014 bottle (though I know I have tried it at the brewery a time or two last year).

Bottle from citybeer in SF about a year ago. Nice warm, sweet aroma of malt, brown sugar, cherry. Warm reddish brown with off white head. Has that characteristic Alesmith medicinal flavour I’m not overly fond of. Nice smooth mouth feel.

Bottle from BrewDog Shepherds Bush. Cloudy, orangey copper, smallish head. Fruity nose, followed by more raisins, plums and complex fruitiness in the mouth. Well-balanced and surprisingly drinkable.

bottle with qc-crew, thanks guys! pours unclear light brown mahogany with a small light beige cap, minimal retention and lacing for its abv. dense toffee and berries, fruity multi-layered caramel, tons of raisins and dried fruit-plethora, very light smokiness/saltiness, lightyl earthy/woody. light to low carbonation, full body - thick; assertive grassy-spicy and warming finish. incredible malt depth/complexity. much enjoyed!

750 ml. Pour is nearly opaque and deep copper-brown. Small ring and spots of bubbles on top. Nose is toffee, dark cherry, dates and chocolate. Tastes of toffee, prune, sherry, vanilla and touches of citrus and earthy/wooden hops. Medium-heavy body has a very drinkable balance given all the malt prominence. Low-medium carbonation level and just a hint of the big abv.
