3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20

I’m not a huge smoked beer fan, but this one had the right amount of smokiness behind a great barleywine base. The hint of maple sweetness is a great added flavor.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle thanks to ZX6Chris, cheers man! Pours a murky dark beige color with a medium white head. A rich nose of fruity malts, smoke and sweet candy, banana. The flavor is a rich medley of smoked malt, candies, caramel, banana esters, warmth, but a overall light flavor. Lots of maple syrup throughout but not overly big in any of the flavors. Interesting and good.

On tap at brewery. Light copper pour with quickly disappearing off white head. Nose is brown sugar maltiness and maple. Taste is big smoke up front. Lots of smoke, but not overpowering. Oats and light brown sugar. Not bad but not OMG either.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle and cask. Pours with a hazed bronze hued body with an off-white head. Aromas are of light smoke, alcohol, caramel, medium dark fruit esters, raisins, dates and pancakes. Flavors are boozy, medium smoke and quite bitter (as far as balance). Lots of alcohol, light maple and dark fruit. Medium bubbles, warming, big bodied. Tasty. Should be fun to see a barrel aged version of this.

750ml Bottle: Aroma of malt, smoke, slight chocolate, a hint of maple syrup, and Bamburg wood. Poured deep orange/brown/copper color with a small, creamy, dense, tan head that diminished quickly but lasted throughout as a film on top of the beer, as well as around the edges. Very hazy. Sparkling. Flavor is medium sweet and lightly bitter. Tastes of malt, smoke, smoked wood, slight raisin, slight toffee, slight hops, and hints of maple and sugar. Medium to full body. Average texture. Average carbonation. Light to medium sweet, slightly bitter, malt, smoke, smoked wood, slight maple finish is slightly dry. 11%ABV is completely hidden throughout.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
750 ml bottle. Pours a deep red brown, with thin off-white head. Heavily smoked malts, sweet and maply, campfire smoke, glazed ham, and finishs with a moderate amount of bitter hops. Really nice and delicous. More like a strong smoked beer then a barleywine. I am looking forward to see how this ages. The abv is well hidden.

On tap at the Alesmith tasting room. I will say I typically don’t drink this style of beer but gave it a try. The smoky maple favor was really nice and not overly hoppy (which I wouldn’t have been a fan of). Overall, glad I tried it and would have it again.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Cask at Alesmith. It pours deep hazy brown, with a thick beige head. The nose is smoke (more obvious than in the taste), maple syrup, brown sugar and smoked ham. The taste is brown sugar, maple syrup, wood, touch of smoke, leather, booze, tangy dark fruit and some smoked ham, with a long, dry finish. Full body and soft carbonation. Very nice.

Capped 750 from The Davis Beer Shoppe in Davis, CA. Pours a very dark ruddy copper with a creamy beige head. Aroma is light smoke with indications of hop. Full bodied. Flavor is brown sugar, smoke and hints of maple. Some hop bitter, but not able to discern details. Arguably there’s some dark fruit, but given the feel I doubt it. It’s a pretty good sipper, and tho there’s heat, it’s not all that disturbing. Overall it’s easier to drink than to pick out the pieces. It finishes more towards dry than sweet. Just the slightest bit sticky - so make that more towards sweet than dry. This stuff keeps changing around.
