Alesmith Decadence Anniversary Ale was originally brewed in 2005 to celebrate our first decade in business. Our brewers had such a great time concocting Alesmith Decadence that they decided to make it an annual event, and brew a new style each year to commemorate our anniversary. Alesmith Decadence 2011 is a Maple Smoked Barley wine. Blending elements of two beer styles, smoke beer and barley-wine. Alesmith has created a unique, homebrew-inspired beer. Big and malty, with a huge Bamberg smoked-malt character, Alesmith Decadence 2011 has another very special ingredient: Vermont maple syrup. The smoky malt flavor is perfectly balanced by modest bittering hop additions. A rich, full-bodied beer designed to deliver a memorable drinking experience. Join our anniversary celebration with Alesmith Decadence. You’ll soon discover why Alesmith is known around the world as the place to find legendary craftsmanship.

Bottle at home, from my Minneapolis Town Hall glass. Consumed on the back deck, while watching the girlfriend cut my (massive) back lawn. Sometimes this leg injury has its benefits (heh heh heh). Pours murky/hazy bronze, with a garnet hue. Moderate to thick pale tan head, great lacing. Nose is smoky, with maple, pecans, clean barley sugar, puffed wheat, and rich toffee. Flavours of toffee, maple, gentle smoke, caramel corn, a bit brandyish, with a touch of fruit towards the finish. A touch hot, but delicious.

UPDATED: DEC 16, 2013 Bottle... Poured brownish, mahogany with a thin, khaki head. Nose of maple, smoke, dark cereal grains, and oak. Nice alcohol character that acted like whiskey with the maple countering it. Hints of light smoke, charred grains, dark fruits, wood, toffee burnt sugars and a flavorful finish.

P: Dark amber with some brown highlights. A: Smoke, peppermint, maple, alcohol and licorice. T: Smoke, toast, alcohol, oak and a bit of maple. M: Full body, very warm and dry. O: The first half was nothing but smoked malts and alcohol and I wasnt feeling it. Halfway through the maple character started coming out and so did caramel malt which I enjoyed. Its worth trying but dont expect much.

Bottle thanks to my beer buddy Jeff who clearly is picking the right things these days! Pour has a dark amber color and a thin covering of off white head. Aroma has roasted malt, maple, and barleywine sweetness. Mouth feel is a medium and it has average carbonation. Flavor gets a bit more of the smoke, nice malts, maple, a bit of barrel character, and hits of fruit. The barleywine is big and there is plenty of malty side but the addition of maple and barrels brings on twists and turns. It certainly warms you and has a bit of heat to back the whole thing up. I don’t know what made him pick this up but I love drinking a milestone beer with good company! 1400!

750ml bottle from City Beer. Clear dark amber pour with a one finger lasting light khaki head. Pretty nice aroma, except with a bit of a sledgehammer of smoky maple. Big smoky flavor with maple syrup and caramel, fairly sweet but not quite more than it should be. Medium-full bodied, not too syrupy, with average carbonation. Solid offering but could stand to ease off a bit on the smoke. I feel like age might help.
