COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Alesmith Decadence Anniversary Ale was originally brewed in 2005 to celebrate our first decade in business. Our brewers had such a great time concocting Alesmith Decadence that they decided to make it an annual event, and brew a new style each year to commemorate our anniversary. Alesmith Decadence 2011 is a Maple Smoked Barley wine. Blending elements of two beer styles, smoke beer and barley-wine. Alesmith has created a unique, homebrew-inspired beer. Big and malty, with a huge Bamberg smoked-malt character, Alesmith Decadence 2011 has another very special ingredient: Vermont maple syrup. The smoky malt flavor is perfectly balanced by modest bittering hop additions. A rich, full-bodied beer designed to deliver a memorable drinking experience. Join our anniversary celebration with Alesmith Decadence. You’ll soon discover why Alesmith is known around the world as the place to find legendary craftsmanship.

Bottle from South Bay Liquor: Poured a dense tea colored brown that was nearly opaque except for the parts of transparency on the outskirts of snifter glass cup. Nose is mild with an obvious smell of maple syrup with a smoky background of burnt wood logs and the faintest whiff of alcohol. Aroma sort of reminded me raw/uncooked applewood smoked bacon. The drink also brings out that smoky flavor of eating pancakes with maple syrup except there is also a lingering taste of Hennessey cognac and a warm alcohol burn similar to other hard liquor such as vodka. Definitely a barleywine that holds its weight with unique and different flavors that stand out compared to the rest.

750 ml bottle. Pours a slightly hazy light cola brown with small white head that sticks around for a while and leaves a good amount of lacing on the glass. The aroma is smoky with caramel, slight maple, and a small amount of alcohol. The initial taste is sweet with some caramel. It is also smoky, meaty, and has a bit of maple. The finish has a light bitterness along with some smokiness. There is also a bit of lingering maple. Medium body. Low carbonation. This was better than I was expecting.

Dark hazy amber color with a frothy egg-white head. Slight smoke on the nose with heavy malty tones. Smoky from the first sip but it never overpowers the taste. Sweet hint of maple and caramel that morphs into a slightly hoppy finish. Slick mouthfeel with a chalky, almost gritty finish.

Bottle from a trade with cbkschubert. Pours clear caramel color with thin tan head. Aromas of lightly smoked malts and molasses. Very sweet molasses flavor, some raisins, very lightly smoked malts with some booziness. Full body with minimal carbonation and a syrupy mouthfeel. Thanks Craig.

Pours dark brown with low carbonation and thick head. Sweet aroma with smokiness. The maple tends to come out as it warms up. Its understated though, enhancing the flavour unlike other poorly crafted beers with maple. Sweet and decadent...alcohol is well hidden for a beer of this abv. Wish I had more to age, would like to try a 2-3 year one.

Pours deep dark amber into a snifter. Off-white head quickly recedes to hug rim. Smoke and dark caramel aroma. Sweet dark caramel and toffee upfront turning to sweet maple before the lasting hot earthy resin finish.

Bottle. Snifter. I knew this one was going to be good. The aroma had plenty of big dark fruit aromas and some caramel behind it. There was a maple sweetness in the aroma that paired well with the light smoke notes. Very nice. Body was hazy dark brown. Khaki head. Mouthfeel was smooth and creamy. The flavors were nicely put together, with tons of plum/raisin, some caramel, a touch of alcohol, some light smoke and a sweet maple tone. Great stuff all around.

I love my barley wines - and never thought some smoke flavor would be a nice addition. The aroma is of lightly smoked meat, maple syrup and apples. For the taste, twas’ just about the same, but more malt-forward with light cherry tones. Maple did come out as it warmed up, nicely covering up the high ABV. OmegaX - you are the man for finding this one.

In short: A very sweet (mostly maple syrup) copper ale with a moderate smoke character. Just ok.
How: Bottle shared with friends, post Tap-NY 2012 Hotel party
The look: Cloudy dark copper body topped by a medium beige head with medium retention
In long: Nose is a bit of smoke and a lot of maple syrup. The smoke character is part wood smoke, part meaty smoke. Taste is uber-sweet, lots of maple syrup, candies, caramel, distant fruity notes, medium smoke presence. Alcohol is not a factor lost in the maple syrup. Somewhat reminiscent of Bruery Lawsons Finest Acer Quercus but more maple syrup and less smoky, I preferred the Acer Quercus. Not my type of brew, maybe with some age on it, right now it is too much of a sugar bomb. Anyway, I told everybody who enjoyed that beer that they don’t have a sophisticated palate, and I’m getting really annoyed that these people think I’m either a pretentious beer snob or a pathetic drunk, for the last time people, I am both.
