Alesmith Decadence Anniversary Ale was originally brewed in 2005 to celebrate our first decade in business. Our brewers had such a great time concocting Alesmith Decadence that they decided to make it an annual event, and brew a new style each year to commemorate our anniversary. Alesmith Decadence 2011 is a Maple Smoked Barley wine. Blending elements of two beer styles, smoke beer and barley-wine. Alesmith has created a unique, homebrew-inspired beer. Big and malty, with a huge Bamberg smoked-malt character, Alesmith Decadence 2011 has another very special ingredient: Vermont maple syrup. The smoky malt flavor is perfectly balanced by modest bittering hop additions. A rich, full-bodied beer designed to deliver a memorable drinking experience. Join our anniversary celebration with Alesmith Decadence. You’ll soon discover why Alesmith is known around the world as the place to find legendary craftsmanship.

Bottle. Pours a murky amber with a slight orange hue and a respectably frothy tan head. Aroma is smoke, roast, char, bacon, wheat, grist, and perhaps some light sweetness from the maple but it is buried deep under the smoke. As the beer warms I get more toffee and raisin character under the smoke. Taste is condensed smoke with char bitterness up front followed by sweetness (the maple I imagine) and then a fairly heavy duty barley wine profile with raisin, toffee, some hop bitterness, and alcohol whispering through the finish. Mouthfeel is even and coating. Exceptionally well crafted and certain to age with the best of ’em. Well done Alesmith!

Bottle shared by alexsdad06 pour lightly hazy copper with thin ecru head. Nose light smoke, peat, bacon, and some sweet malt, maple and grape. Taste moderate bitter bite up front, then toffee, and hint of smoke. Light spicy finish. Expected more smoke and maple in the flavor.

Shared at a tasting at douglas88 place (sorry I’m not giving props to who brought it - can’t remember) - pours reddish amber with a tan head. The aroma has smoke, toffee, brown sugar, maple sweetness, richness and some berries. It has a full rich chewy body with soft carbonation. The taste starts with maple, heavy toast, caramel, toffee, English yeast, wood and some oxidation. The finish is woody and grainy. Quite nice.

Bottle shared. Pours cloudy brown with a small tan head. Aroma of butterscotch, toffee, sweet malt, light spice, booze. Flavour is light heavy sweet and light moderate bitter. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. A little disappointing and one dimensional, expected more from this.

UPDATED: AUG 20, 2015 Bottle shared thanks to Kermis. Hazy dark amber with some little things floating around. Lots of sweet malts, sugars, butterscotch, yeast, bitter herbs, maybe some light smoke, toffee, dried peach. Over medium sweet with alcoholic bitter finish. Full bodied, with low carbonation and the body just dissoves in your mouth. Weird beer, not too bad but a bit one dimensional.

Bottle. Hazy clear amber with legs but no head. Aroma is big, spicy, yeast, malt, moderate smoke, alcohol heat. Flavor is dense malt smoke, earthy dense hops, meaty finish. Feel is thin with a little heat. So well constructed and could age longer.

Bottle from long ago. I forget where I purchased it; probably Belmont Station. A: Dark mahogany that’s near to black. Creme colored foam head. Some lacing. N: Maple syrup, smoke, caramel, vanilla, some cocoa, more smoke resulting in whiffs of bacon, hint of black peppercorn, earth, and a rounding out of pine. T: Smoky, bitter, and sweet commingled together in elegant proportion. M: Medium body, foamy prickling carbonation, alcohol is well-hidden. O: Tasty mixture of maple syrup and smoked barleywine. The maple adds the type of complexity to this that something like Canadian Breakfast Stout is missing. Excellent beer; I expect that this has mellowed quite a bit.
