COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle conditioned.
AleSmith Grand Cru really needs to be tasted to be truly appreciated. Toasty, caramelly flavors, as well as flavors imparted by the Belgian yeast strain, predominate over a tapestry of subtle nuances. Winner of the blue ribbon at the 1999 California State Fair, it is a thing of beauty. It is available in 750 ml. champagne bottles. Appearance: Crystal clear (when served properly), with a toast-brown color. Flavor: Starts with the tangy flavor of our championship Belgian yeast, then fades to a medium-light flavor of vanilla, caramel and chocolate. Finishes dry and well-balanced with a slightly toasty flavor. Aroma: Vanilla and chocolate aromas predominate, along with the Belgian yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Clean and crisp, medium-bodied. Warmth from the high alcohol content makes it feel like a fine wine.

750 ml. bottle. Pours brown with a nice biege head. Aroma of malt, caramel, and yeast. Taste is sweet malt, brown sugar, molasses, and dark fruit. Warming. For me a bit too sweet. Very nice though.

Bottle. Pours a clear reddish brown with a large off white head. Good lacing. Aroma is Belgian yeast, vanilla, and a slight floral hoppiness. Taste is much the same, Belgian yeast, candi sugar, hops, vanilla. Mouthfeel is light with good carbonation. Finishes warm. I will definitely be having this again.

Shared with Holy. Aroma of cloves and caramel. Poured too soon after traveling so cloudy, instead of clear. Blend of caramel and citrus with a bread background. Good, but it may be better if kept away from airplanes.

Bottle courtesy of and shared with quiznoaz - thank you! Well, the description set me straight! I had to taste the Grand Cru, to be able to appreciate the Grand Cru. Well enough - I really didn’t appreciate it before I opened it, so the caption was DEAD ON! Additionally, my Grand Cru was a little cloudy - a huge fail on my part to serve it ’Crystal clear...’ I have no business to rate this any further. Don’t judge me.

Bottle at home, out of my Maudite glass. Pours clear bronze, with a hint of brown. One and a half finger thick off-white head; ropey lacing. Nose is very funky, like Limburger cheese, is this intentional? Lots of cherry, and yeast notes, but overall a quite simple, if unique nose. Flavours of cherry, chocolate, brandy, red licorice. Okay, nothing real special...

Pours copper with an off white head. Aroma of malt, spicy fruits. Flavor is sweet and fruity and acidic.

Poured into a snifter. 2010 vintage. I reviewed a fresh bottle (which was lost in one of BA’s "lost review" moments) and didn’t care for it much. We’ll see if this is any better with some time on it. 3.0 A: Opaque medium brown color. Two fingers of fizzy beige head. Retention is below average and no lacing is left. 3.0 S: Brown sugar, caramel, and a rum soaked raisin type booziness. Fig and prune fruitiness. Some toastiness in there as well. Peppery spiciness. Light bready maltiness. The flavor profile looks better on paper than how it actually smells. The aromas don’t balance each other out that well. Still, not bad. 2.5 T: This has mellowed to the point of being boring. Brown sugar and caramel are the strongest flavors. Almost tart fruitiness featuring dates, figs, and raisins. Light peppery spiciness. Booze is in check though. 2.5 M: Medium body. Carbonation level is right, but it’s a "passive" carbonation as opposed to the spritzy Belgain yeast carbonation that I like. Seems almost oily. Smooth though. 2.5 D: Didn’t care for it fresh and I care for it even less with some age. It’s not undrinkable, but it’s boring with a subpar mouthfeel. 750ml bottle in a Trappist glass. Pours deep brown but transparent with a lacy, beige head. Aroma of spicy yeast, caramel and light chocolate, and vanilla, plus floral hops. Flavor about the same, with a lot of yeast, malts, and sweetness. Smooth texture. A pretty good beer.
