Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
AleSmith Grand Cru really needs to be tasted to be truly appreciated. Toasty, caramelly flavors, as well as flavors imparted by the Belgian yeast strain, predominate over a tapestry of subtle nuances. Winner of the blue ribbon at the 1999 California State Fair, it is a thing of beauty. It is available in 750 ml. champagne bottles. Appearance: Crystal clear (when served properly), with a toast-brown color. Flavor: Starts with the tangy flavor of our championship Belgian yeast, then fades to a medium-light flavor of vanilla, caramel and chocolate. Finishes dry and well-balanced with a slightly toasty flavor. Aroma: Vanilla and chocolate aromas predominate, along with the Belgian yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Clean and crisp, medium-bodied. Warmth from the high alcohol content makes it feel like a fine wine.

750 ml bottle shared by theisti. Pours a hazy bronze with a creamy beige head that quickly reduces to a thin ring of bubbles clinging to the edge of the glass. The nose is of banana, toffee, apples, brown sugar & alcohol. (Aside from 3F’s Alpha Kong, I’ve never smelled a non-wheat beer that smells more like bananas than this one.) Medium-bodied and grainy with a mildly "warm" finish. The flavor is a boozy version of the nose. This is certainly a solid beer, but I guess after giving a 4+ rating to the seven Alesmith beers I’ve sampled prior to this one, I felt just a little "let down" by this beer. It may not be fair to expect every beer a brewer makes to be a home run, but if a 3.8 is your lowest mark, you are definitely doing something right. This is easily my favorite brewer, worldwide. Thanks again for giving me the chance to try this one, Tim.

On tap at the 1702 bar in Tucson-which deserves much recognition for the nice 45 tap selection. Beer was bright red with a small head. Nose of bitterness, funkiness. Tart, bitter and funky taste-just a really easy drinking and very dangerous beer considering the ABV. I need a bottle of this.

750 ml bottle purchased mail order from South Bay in Imperial Beach, CA. No date marking on the bottle, though I purchased the bottle recently and I assume it is relatively young. Pour is dark orange ruby, cloudy. Thinnish off white head, immediately fades to cling to the edge of the glass. Aroma is menthol booziness, banana, and pepper spice. Quite a bit going on, though not sure how well it all goes together for me. Taste is sweet caramel and bitter orange peel. Some grassy yeastiness in the finish, followed by alcohol heat. Booze is pretty well integrated, didn’t detract too much. Palate medium to big, coats the mouth nicely. This beer was decent, though I was left wanting based on the other gems I have had from AleSmith. Thanks for doing mail order Joey.

Pours bronze with a white head. Aromas of pear juice, honey, and light pepper. The flavor is honey, vanilla, and pepper. Medium/full body with high carbonation. Sweet finish. For me, this fell well short of expectations. Thanks for sharing Tim.

Pours hazy rose with one finger beige head. Aroma of citrus and spicy yeast with some caramel malt, banana, amnd apricot. Very complex in its aromas. Flavor is just as complex- Banana, dark fruit, and complez malt elements meld together with a unique yeast strain to create a definite fruity character with some kick to it. Rich and smooth, but oh so drinkable.

750 bottle poured into a tulip glass has a red amber color and a white two finger head that took pouring with vigor to produce. aroma has toasted caramel malt, plumb, amazing spiced yeast, candy sugar, and vanilla. the yeast is almost peppery and is fantastic to take in. flavor has bold plummy malt up against the spiced yeast. very smooth drinking, just enough carbonation, toasted wood, and vanilla. rich mouth feel but not thick in texture. alcohol is noted but deceptively low for a 10.8 abv.

pours a red plum coloration, with a really nice head. aroma is nice, but subtle, nothing too aggressive, smells like a good belgian strong, nothing too exciting beyond that- dark fruit, some banana, etc. flavor is delicious with cherry, strawberry and other fruit, and malt- doesn’t have the balance or intensity to compete with pannepot. really nice beer though, good mouthfeel, lingering after taste- good stuff.
