COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle conditioned.
AleSmith Grand Cru really needs to be tasted to be truly appreciated. Toasty, caramelly flavors, as well as flavors imparted by the Belgian yeast strain, predominate over a tapestry of subtle nuances. Winner of the blue ribbon at the 1999 California State Fair, it is a thing of beauty. It is available in 750 ml. champagne bottles. Appearance: Crystal clear (when served properly), with a toast-brown color. Flavor: Starts with the tangy flavor of our championship Belgian yeast, then fades to a medium-light flavor of vanilla, caramel and chocolate. Finishes dry and well-balanced with a slightly toasty flavor. Aroma: Vanilla and chocolate aromas predominate, along with the Belgian yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Clean and crisp, medium-bodied. Warmth from the high alcohol content makes it feel like a fine wine.

Not a great beer at all, not terrible, I wouldnt buy it again. I was expecting substantially more. Only alesmith beer i have ever hated. just too big and bold with rasin and esters and fruit and phenols. had almost a rotten fruit taste. did not care for it.

10-JUL-2010, bottle @home, from "Fish & Beer". Lovely brown with huge head. Typical belgian strong, with loads of fruit (and dried fruit), charamel, and chocolate. Almost desert wine like but with a high carbonation and low alcohol (!) level. Very fine and balanced brew.

Bottle. Orange like pour with tan head. Pear, toffee, chewy fruity malt notes with some light sweetness with hints of vanilla, caramel and chocolate and a bit of warming through the fruit character.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with a big tan head and tons of lacing. Flavor of caramel, dark fruit, nuts, and sugary sweetness. This is a really great, balanced beer, great for a 300th rating.

750mL from SouthBay, Pours a clear, deep red ruby with a towering yellow head that has absolutely insane retention and good to decent lacing. Holy beep. Nose at first is a sharp citric tartness, green apples, rich buttery caramel, mulled spice, mulled apple cider with whipped cream. Taste begins tart, dry, moves to caramel, spice, never moving to that characteristic sickly sweetness and old candy that plagues these dark fruit-forward Belgian strongs. But it does go a little papery, thin, cardboardy. Pretty yummy.

Thanks to Exiled for sharing this beer. This is my 1,700th beer and it didn’t disappoint. The beer pours a hazy brown color with a white head. The aroma is sweet sugar with some vanilla and cherry notes. The flavor is cherry, caramel malt, brown sugar, alcohol, Belgian yeast and Belgian candi-sugar. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. A great American-made Belgian-style beer. Glad I got to try this one.
