AleSmith Grand Cru really needs to be tasted to be truly appreciated. Toasty, caramelly flavors, as well as flavors imparted by the Belgian yeast strain, predominate over a tapestry of subtle nuances. Winner of the blue ribbon at the 1999 California State Fair, it is a thing of beauty. It is available in 750 ml. champagne bottles. Appearance: Crystal clear (when served properly), with a toast-brown color. Flavor: Starts with the tangy flavor of our championship Belgian yeast, then fades to a medium-light flavor of vanilla, caramel and chocolate. Finishes dry and well-balanced with a slightly toasty flavor. Aroma: Vanilla and chocolate aromas predominate, along with the Belgian yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Clean and crisp, medium-bodied. Warmth from the high alcohol content makes it feel like a fine wine.

Foil-topped 750. Pours clear amber with a scant but lacy head. Full sweet body and minimal carbonation. Sweet taste of toast, toffee and fruit. Interesting, but not quite so balanced as the brewer claims.

Another amazing beer by AleSmith...still holds up as my favorite brewer. Hazy copper pour with hints of tangerine and rust produced a creamy eggshell head. Aroma is caramel, spice, brown sugar, and vanilla. Full-flavored with notes of honey-baked biscuit, toffee, and belgian yeast. Not quite syrupy palate...yum!!! Love that AleSmith is readily available...

750ml bottle aged since 2006. Extremely murky beer on pouring, perhaps too agitated in transit from my cellar to the tasting. Looked a dark brown, soup like consistency. The nose was aged, dried apricot. On tasting the subdued fruit and sugary first notes slowly retreated to allow a toffee malt profile to emerge. There was almost no carbonation left in this beer and the alcohol was well concealed. I liked it but I was expecting so much more. Did I age it too long?

Bottle pours a burnt copper color with a tightly tucked, white linen head. The aroma is full of sweet caramel, brown sugar, toast, dried fruit and a slight soapy quality. The flavor shows vanilla, caramel, raisins and the malt is somewhat nutty. Behind it all is a biting touch of alcohol, on the nose, as well as the palate. The overall mouthfeel is suprisingly light and finish is sorta hot. Not too shabby. Get’s much much better as it warms.

Bottle at the “Drink for Charity” event at Rattle & Hum. Pours a hazy ruby brown with a thin beige head. Toast, plums, malt, and isopropyl. Medium bodied with a big bubblegum flavor, along with malt, and dark fruit. Finishes with more malt, and a touch of licorice.

Sampled at Springslicker’s Fish fry. Hazy burnt orange brown pour with thin white head and some particulate. Sweet and malty with lots of brown sugar and a little yeast covers the abv fairly well, but it is still noticeable. Damn good and another great bottle from these guys.
