AleSmith Grand Cru really needs to be tasted to be truly appreciated. Toasty, caramelly flavors, as well as flavors imparted by the Belgian yeast strain, predominate over a tapestry of subtle nuances. Winner of the blue ribbon at the 1999 California State Fair, it is a thing of beauty. It is available in 750 ml. champagne bottles. Appearance: Crystal clear (when served properly), with a toast-brown color. Flavor: Starts with the tangy flavor of our championship Belgian yeast, then fades to a medium-light flavor of vanilla, caramel and chocolate. Finishes dry and well-balanced with a slightly toasty flavor. Aroma: Vanilla and chocolate aromas predominate, along with the Belgian yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Clean and crisp, medium-bodied. Warmth from the high alcohol content makes it feel like a fine wine.

Bottle I bought last year in Ohio, which probably makes it about 12 months old. Hazy ruby/orange color with a medium head. Aroma of caramel malt, toffee, cherries and pears. Mostly sweet with a spicy finish. Medium/heavy body.

An extremely well done BSA. Beautiful pour with an ample two finger head, nicely frothy, with some really pretty lacing. Lots of strong dark fruit flavors in the nose. moderately yeasty, with a strong matlitness, that is somewhat tart at times with great carbonation and acidity. Just dry enough on the palate, with a creamy texture that keeps me coming back sip after sip and wanting another bottle. This beer makes you selfish. I loved it!

UPDATED: JUN 3, 2011 Bottle shared by a friendly local. Poured a deep amber color with a thin beige head that faded to a ring. Aroma consists of a light, sweet maltiness, moderate fruit, and some yeast. Lightly tart, sweet entry with some moderate fruitiness (apple, light green grapes) leading into a lightly dry, yeasty finish. Smooth, lightly dry on the palate. May have been an off bottle, because I have heard better things. Re-rate: nose consists more of brown sugar sweetness along with some plum, fig, and light raisin. Flavor is similar to the previous bottle with some more hints of darker fruit and a soft toasted grain and light sweetness on the finish. The flavor is just doesn’t seem to match the aroma, its weird.

Pours cloudy amber with yeasty aroma and sweet dark fruit. Taste is sweet up front then a slightly sour finish. Solid brew, I was hoping that it would be up there with Abbaye des Rocs but it’s not. Still really good though just a bit boozy for my taste.

UPDATED: JAN 25, 2009 (June 2008 Beer Club Meeting) Lightly cloudy orange/amber color. Light yeast/caramel smell. Taste is AWESOMELY sour. So very well done. Thin, but syrupy. Clinching on the tongue. My god... love at first taste. A little fruity, but not overly so...but still can’t taste the alcohol at all. Impressinve!

750ml bottle. poured a light mahogany with almost no head. Very light aroma in the nose, belgian yeasts were apparent. This bottle was very bubbly and well carbonated. Found it to be fruity , with some malts in the background. The finish was long and also fruity, but ended quite dry. Fairly thin mouthful.
